Help DC Identify Realistic Target and Safety Schools

Anonymous
Relatively new and don’t know all the current lingo, but looking to help DC identify “realistic” and “safety” schools based on the criteria they’ve figured out so far.

Stats: Public HS. 3.98 UW, 1530 SAT, 10 APs, including Calc BC, Bio, Physics, and Physics C. Three sport Varsity athlete since 10th (but not recruited- wants to play Club or intramural only.) A few other interesting/selective ECs but nothing national-level or extraordinary.

DC wants a traditional leafy campus with a lot of school spirit and high level sports to watch. Mid-size (5-8k undergrad?) Not limited geographically. Suburban/near a city (but not in the heart of one) would be a plus. Broad interests, no major in mind yet. Full pay.

Reaches/Lottery (will likely ED one):
Duke?
Northwestern?
Cornell?
Vanderbilt?

Would love some ideas for more “realistic” targets and “safety” schools that fit this vibe.

Wisconsin.

U of Miami is a target/likely with those stats, in a suburb near Miami, mid-size, good culture for sports.

What high level sports are at Cornell and Vanderbilt?

Boston College, University of Rochester. A safety option might be SMU

Has more than 37,000 undergrads at Madison alone, not 5-8K like OP wants.

Cornell seems like a terrible fit

College of the Holy Cross, Notre Dame, Stanford, SMU, Naval Academy, William and Mary, Villanova.

You are suggesting Stanford as a likely or safety?

Naval Academy is a terrible plan unless a kid is clear that they want to join the Navy. OP’s kid isn’t.

Mid-size is going to be your primary limiting factor, near a city next. Some possibilities--none are quite perfect but might fit the bill.
Wake Forest
Lehigh University came to my mind. It's in Bethlehem which is not a big city, but the area feels dense-ish.
Villanova if he's comfortable with a not too religious but still Catholic school. Likewise, Gonzaga--which is in Spokane, WA.
University of Vermont--not too big on the traditional sports and bigger than you like (11-12k undergrads) but on the nice nature-y edge of an accessible city.
Butler in Indianapolis

UF checks most of the boxes though larger student body

Small schools with big sports is a big ask. Leafy campus near a city doesn't make it easier. Richmond? Pitt? Neither falls into your size range, but either/both might offer the size/vibe your DC actually is looking for.

I’m not very up on sports but otherwise:

For ED, I’d suggest something like Vandy or Rice for ED1 and BC for ED2. Also consider Wash U.

Target - Villanova

Likely - Santa Clara but have to show interest; Denver University
