Experience at Loyola Maryland- please share

Did your kid attend? Any feedback on school, "vibe", career/internship networking etc. Kid has decent stats so think we could get decent merit. Sort of nerdy, non sports kid unsure of major but considering econ, poli sci or business.

They are known for business.

Not really a place for nerdy types, although I saw a few extroverted nerds do well enough.

I went there a long time ago and in February I called a friend who works in the career center, to ask how I could help place graduates in jobs in NOVA in education. She said that everyone in that field that was graduating already had been placed.

They are experiencing a glow up and I am sending my child there. Their typical GPA for the class of 2028 is 3.7.

My child's merit aid came to around 50% (for 4 years). Community service is a huge part of the focus. For business and for helping professions, like speech pathology, it has a great reputation.

Many people who went there have children who go there because it's a pretty warm and inspiring place. Professors care a lot. I was ill one semester and had to stay home. Every single teacher called my family home to make sure I was OK.

They don't make you choose a major until 2 years in, but you can start out with a focus. Good luck to your kid! Don't let the price tag scare you.

My son will be a sophomore there and I’m an alum. I loved my time there. Students were friendly are low key like me. Plenty of non-Catholics or Catholics who aren’t practicing. They do have great opportunities for volunteering. I really liked my professors and I’m still friendly with one of my favorites many years later.

Beautiful campus and nice dorms. I think they are voted as having top dorms every year. My son is local but met some new people including his freshman year roommate who just came to visit from out of town. They are rooming together next year. A big group of kids from PA, NJ, and NY (mostly Long Island).

Oh and they give great merit aid that’s good for four years. They gave more merit aid than any other Catholic school he applied to (and gave a small alumni grant on top of it).

How would you compare vibe of students to other schools in MD and VA?

For those who visited Loyola and St Joe's which did you prefer?

They seemed almost identical to me even down to the bridge across campus. My kid chose Loyola in the end because of the better FA package and proximity to home.

Agreed. I have a kid at St. Joe's (which we love). I know many people whose kids applied to both and they just picked their favorite city. Quite similar vibes.

I'm also curious about this. At an information session, we were told only 30% of students come from Maryland.

DD went to admitted students day for an engineering major and really like it (college and major), even though the major is small. They talked a lot about all the research opportunities and professor interaction the kids would get, since there are no graduate students. I think it surprisingly was DDs top choice from an overall school feel, but she ended up at a state school only because she really wanted to do marching band in college. Personally I came away with a higher regard for the school than I thought I would. Modest grades and submitted 1240 got the $35k merit award.

It’s about 1/3 from MD.
