Driving without insurance

A friend recently admitted to me that to save money she doesn’t have car insurance. This sounds like a horrible idea to me. obviously if she gets in an accident it will be very expensive. Is an accident the only way this can catch up with her? I’m trying to talk some sense into her.

I have known people throughout my life who made this "decision," usually out of poverty.

OP, you are not going to talk sense into someone who simply cannot afford insurance. She is going without something she cannot afford. Do you plan to "talk sense" into her getting health insurance too?

In MD, the DMV and the insurance companies talk to each other. They report when insurance has been dropped and gained. There is a fine associated with that. They did not record that I turned in a set of plates on a car, so they said I owed over a thousand dollars in fines. I can't remwmber how I straighened that out. It was awhile ago.

Pp here. Additionally, I had someone sue me for medical bills after an accidrnt 20 years ago. I was a teenager. They claimed $20,000 in medical bills, went to a doctor, and had all these tests done and treatment for things that were already wrong with them. I had a friend in my 20's try to do the same thing on my insurance. Minor fender bender and she wanted to take the car that hit us for the $30,000 maximum. Friendship ender. Another guy in 2015 tried to do the same, but our insurance compqnies found us both at fault. It is not just being on the hook for the car repair. People are jerks.

Oh, and in MD, your license and registration could be automatically suspended. So if she gets pulled over, she could get a crimjnal (not traffic ticket) and have her car impounded.

Marylander here. One of my employees caused an accident and had her car impounded as she has no insurance.

She ended up losing her job as she had no way to get to work. We are in the country and she was unable to get rides.

Sadly, she overdosed on drugs about 9 months after the accident.

There are a lot of people without insurance.

Whatever your feelings about immigration, we have a lot of undocumented immigrants in this area. Do you think their vehicles are properly registered, licensed, and insured if they're undocumented?

My experience is that the only people who do that are Americans like my ex. No illegal immigrant puts themselves at risk of being caught. If any, they may drive someone else's car with a license abroad.

I'm not saying it's right, but if you're in an accident and not at fault, the payout is never enough to replace your car. If you happen to have some neck and back pain and go to a doctor and then PT, the payout is enough to cover the bills and replace your car.

You can be arrested for driving while uninsured in Maryland. My friend barely drives and she found an insurance policy that charges by the mile and is very cheap. Maybe your friend could do the same.

Same thing happened to me - always take pictures when you turn in your tags.

I’ve also been notified by MVA on an occasion where my insurer didn’t notify MVA of my insurance. My insurer had to file a report with MVA.

Why are your friends with a person like this? Yikes.

Years ago, I was rear ended by someone who I assume was illegal. He had a driver’s license on him, but it was clearly not his. The pic looked nothing like him, lol. He pleaded that we not call the cops. I agreed because it was a small fender bender. He gave me cash to get my bumper fixed and we went our separate ways.

It will also catch up to her if she gets pulled over for any reason as you have to have proof insurance and registration. Its a class 3 misdemeanor in VA and a $600 fine.

This is all well and good until you find out you have more damage to your car than originally thought.
