Groundhog in the yard

Anonymous
My husband just found a groundhog waddling through our front yard. Are we able to capture and trap it and give it to the County or do I call pest control? Husband thinks we should kill it, it may attack the children.

Leave him alone.

Trap it with a have a heart trap, then throw it in a lake at night. Problem solved.

Groundhogs don't harm people

Do nothing. No they don’t attack humans.

I have a new groundhog friend too. They like clover. It's been pretty dry lately, so I imagine he is searching far and wide.

Have you ever heard on a groundhog attacking humans before?

Groundhogs are a danger to your plants, yard and landscaping. They are absolutely no threat to you and your family.

If you don't want them to damage your plants and dig holes, then humanely trap and release somewhere else. But do not kill it.

The risk appears to be non-zero.

Therefore, maximum dangerful.

We had a couple and put out a large cage and got them in with a path of vegetables and fruit into the cage. We took them about five miles away to a wooded area and let them go. Haven't seen any since and this was five years ago

Absolutely harmless. Groundhogs do not attack anything or anyone. They eat grass and may go after a vegetable garden so use fencing and netting on your garden, but otherwise leave it be. If you try to call authorities about it, they will probably laugh at you.

Why on earth are you afraid of a marmot? Aka a chuck, wood-shock, groundpig, whistlepig, whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk, land beaver, and, among French Canadians in eastern Canada, siffleux.

We've had one for years. We love him. Please don't hurt him or move him, you are actually lucky. Let him have his best life.

Not true. Groundhogs dig tunnels under house and can cause damage to foundation.
