Even if they do reach a "deal," how is that going to work? It sounds like any deal would include some changes to the rules, some committee assignments, and some chairmanships. McCarthy wouldn't control those even as Speaker. As I understand it, the rules package will need a majority vote from the whole house and the Democrats are not going to give any of their 212 votes to enforce that deal. And the other 200+ republicans who weren't party to the deal are very unlikely to agree either. Committee assignments are determined by the conference, and the 200 republicans who just freed their hostage probably aren't going to feel like handing a bunch of committee assignments to the hostage takers.

Members-elect should also acknowledge all the members of Congress who, on that day two years ago, worked to keep our democratic republic alive. AND SPECIFICALLY thank Kevin McCarthy for his attempt to stop the violence on that day, quoting his own words, “When they started breaking into my office, myself and the staff got removed from the office. In doing so, I made a phone call to the president telling him what was going on, asking him to tell these people to stop, to make a video, to go out. I was very intense and very loud about it." and reminding everyone of McCarthy’s concurrence with Mitch McConnell that January 6th was a “violent insurrection”.

And after that acknowledgment of McCarthy’s anti-insurrection stance (but not his subsequent back-tracking and Trump licking) just enough Democratic members-elect should vote for him to ensure his election as Speaker of the House on this anniversary of the January 6 Insurrection.

The combination of Democratic votes and an on-the-record, highly visible reminder of his (admittedly brief) stance against Trump and other insurrectionists will erase whatever remains of McCarthy’s ability to lead the Republican party and the House … from the very first day of his Speakership.

While not on the floor of the House, House Minority Leader Jeffries led this very moving ceremony on the Capitol steps this morning:

During House proceedings today, will even a single Republican member-elect acknowledge the violent attack on our republic two years ago?

ONE.

One Republican.

The Washington Post just announced that Rep. Ted Lieu (D) just voted for Hakeen Jeffries for Speaker. Are the Democrats voting? If so, why don't they just all vote for Jeffries for Speaker? They only need to get a few Rs on their side (which, I know, is pretty much an impossibility).

In a nutshell, no Democrat will vote for a Republican, and no Republican will vote for a Democrat.

No, this is not true. Democrats won't vote for an election saboteur nor someone who will not partner in good faith. If GOP put up one of the handful of non-election deniers a Speaker, Dem would consider it.

Don't try to both sides this. GOP dysfunction and everyone expects the Dems to clean up their sh!t. Just like maintenance had to clean up insurrectionists sh!t.

Like who? I'm struggling to think of any GOP rep who is not somewhere on the spectrum of crazy.

Fred Upton?

He's no longer in Congress. And he's not there because he was run out by the crazies. Why would we think the crazy people that ran him out would now vote for him?

Speaker doesn’t have to be a MoC, which is curious given they are second in the line of succession.

Very interesting. Your point?

NP. The point is that the line of succession was changed from Sec.of State, 2nd in line, to Speaker because it was thought that it should be someone who had been elected,by the people.

Next time maybe you should know what you're talking about before castigating someone else.

Google Presidential succession act of 1947.

Everyone knows the speaker doesn't need to be a representative. Upton could not get republican votes because he is considered to be a traitor by the party.

If there is a deal, will it be indicated by the fact that more families will be in the chamber?

You know perfectly well that Gaetz is talking through his hat and will no more resign than he will admit to sex trafficking.

You mean all of this preening was just fake theater for the cameras and social mediation?! No way!

Sooo...
Are you anti-McCarthy?

Bozos on all sides. It was obvious this was all fake. McCarthy is going to be speaker.

It absolutely is not fake. What in earth would be the point? McCarthy is mortally wounded and the FC is pissing off their own caucus. No Republican is coming out of this looking better; it’s turning off the very independents and suburban voters the Rs are desperate to recapture.

I’m fine with them shutting down the House for a month. Maybe they will remember what not getting a paycheck (despite having to work) feels like the next time they want to play chicken with the budget.

I’ll feel bad for George Santos’s new landlord though.

It will be indicated by the fact that Kevin McCarthy will be shouting it from every microphone in the land because he does not have an ounce of chill or discretion.
