I have no idea when people use this as a guidepost for admissions ie “3.7 at big 3 isn’t getting into Williams”. Is it similar to collegiate etc?

What is big3? |
I believe you still say "big three" in NY except with the regional accent. |
We don’t |
Best privates in key areas:
Manhattan/NYC: Brearely, Dalton, Chapin Bronx: Horace Mann, Riverdale Country San Francisco: Urban, Lick-Wilmerding, University Oakland/East Bay: College Prep, Head Royce Silicon Valley: Nueva, Harker, Castilleja (all girls) LA: Harvard-Westlake Boarding (US): Philips Andover, Philips Exeter, Choate Hall, Lawrenceville, Groton, Hotchkiss |
I think you have to remember that big three is a bit lower tier than places like riverdale and much lower than places like collegiate.
Money, connections, legacy and then the mansions process itself is harder. A 3.7 from Brearley does just fine. |
All I know is dc has no real feeders. The big three seem to me to be packer level |
Big 3 are tiers below NYC schools like Trinity, Dalton, Horace Mann, Brearley, Collegiate... or a school like Harvard-Westlake in LA. These are qualitatively different, on many levels.
The SF schools are a better comparison. |
SPS = St. Paul's School. Third largest endowment behind Exeter & Andover, but half as many students (total of 540). No PGs. No day students = 100% boarding. 50% female/50% male. About 25% + to Ivy League schools each year. Used to be higher (about 33.3% to 35%). outstanding academics. |
Chapin is not in the same league as Brearly or Dalton |
Lots of threads about this in the Private School forum - here’s one but search for Chapin or Dalton there and you’ll find more

It’s Choate Rosemary Hall. |
