What a stupid policy. So unless you’re a fool, everyone will just re-take or re-do assignments until they get an A?

| It sucks for kids who get a B- the first time around. You're better off getting a C and retaking to an A- |
| Already a thread. |
No — under the new policy, you can re-take regardless of your initial grade! Got a 96? Retake to shoot for a 100! Why not? Sucks for the teachers. |
Actually, maybe not. Parents will no longer bug them about how to raise their kids’ grades. Teacher will just say retake the test! |
| No. This was already our policy at our high school and plenty of times the retake was harder and my kid got a B- on the test and a C on the retake (so he just kept the B-). They was almost always remediation before the retake as well. It is more work for teachers but many teachers were positive about it when they explained it at BTSN. They said the point is that they learn the content and if it takes a few extra tries it doesn’t matter. It also lessens the pressure if you have a big play or game or Latin convention and get off track. You will be busy but you can try again. It’s not a problem. It will be fine. I hear all about my cousins across the country and every school is different and colleges get that. One cousin gets plus 1.0 for any honors classes and takes a study hall as one of her 7 classes. Another has all these A+ grades so her GPA is like a 4.7. In the end colleges read through the profiles and compare the students with the other students in their school and figure out who should go where. It’ll be fine. Except for the teachers making up all the extra tests for a second try. Sorry teachers. We’ll send wine. |
| I guess it’s a good training ground to create a bunch of annoying, petty grade grubbers who know how to manipulate the system. Just what we need! |
When was the last time this method was used? Since my kids have been in FCPS, these have never been part of the grade calculation as far as I can tell. Grades have strictly been calculated based on tests and homework, I've never seen any "fudge factor" for behavior, participation, or study habits. |
If you make the grades all about the numbers you get on tests and homework, and nothing else, then you are guaranteed to get this result. |
| Kids who actually need the retakes almost never take them. They should put a limit on who can retake a test (eg, c or lower). |
Nah. If a kid wants to make sure he gets an A in the class instead of a B, nothing wrong with that at all. |
Too bad this new grading policy wont be enforced for all Fairfax high schools. Apparently equity only matters if you have a principal who cares about their students more than their own careers. Why is the school board and administration allowing this to happen? |
Agree with the first sentence, disagree with the second although I don’t think retake grades should be above 90%. I predict this latest move is going to produce more As but do nothing to close the achievement gap. |
Where does it say this policy will not take place at all high schools? It looks like this is a new policy to standardize all the high schools since they currently all have different policies. I do wonder how this will affect the schools using the SBG method though. |

Way to prepare the kids for college or the real world.
No retakes in college. Boss might go easy have to redo something every once in a while but not often. Of course this really sucks for the teacher as well. Just save time and give everyone As. Kids who want to learn will, kids who don’t will wind up on the dole. |
