S/o What the f do you all want from doctors?

Anonymous
On dcurbanmoms it seems that:

People want doctors to make pennies and do work for free….

But they get mad when primary care doctors who make little money are quitting and leaving them without care.

People want doctors who pass and excel on their training exams and have tons of knowledge but then get mad at doctors who “think they know more than them” or the think NP/ PAs are better even though they don’t have to take these exams or do any training.

So seriously what do you want from doctors? Should they even exist anymore?

I don’t care what they make. Raise it, lower it, whatever.

I want them to prioritize me as the patient over interacting with the EMR, not to be supercilious AHs, and to answer calls/emails with correct information—not patronizing gatekeeping—in fewer than 72 hours.

I would appreciate it if fewer PCPs punted every single illness involving an identifiable body system to a specialist, but this is lower-level.

If they are going to do this, however, I would like them to actually coordinate care.

This is good. And I’ll add that I’d be fine with compensating for responding to emails/calls but agree with avoiding the gatekeeping because the responses from the gatekeepers are often inaccurate. I want them to LISTEN to my description of the issue (and I make a real effort to be very succinct).

All of these are issues with modern health care and doctors aren’t the drivers behind it. Hence, the rise in concierge medicine, which everyone hates on here as well.

I want them and their staff to be polite and helpful. I want them to listen and talk through concerns to find a solution. I don’t want to feel like I’m being rushed out the door. I don’t want them to argue with me if I say no to a treatment option. I want them to explain multiple options and why each are good or bad and let me make the best decision. And I want them to be smarter than me and have experience and not try to fix everything with meds without at least providing me with information on other options first. If I have a concern that can be answered with a minute phone call I don’t want to be asked to come to the office. I don’t want to talk to someone else about the issue either, just call me back in 24 hours. Oh and I don’t want to be charged insurance rates if I’m paying out of pocket. That’s really it, I’d pay big bucks if you know where to find them. House calls would be a plus too.

I’d like my doctor to spend more than the 3-4 minutes I tend to get with her. I feel like I don’t get the chance to ask questions, etc.

I know she’s overworked, but so are many of us.

I wish my doctor would spend more time and attention with me but I don't blame her personally. I know that she is considered a replaceable hamburger flipper by her private equity owners. Elections have consequences.

ND (New Doctor).

Very, very gently -- and please don't misread me here -- I would invite anyone engaging in a one minute phone call to additionally just eyeball the clock and note how long it actually takes.

Maybe 1 minute, maybe not. I'm someone who logs telehealth exact times for billing, and it's interesting. But just take a peek, eh? No pressure.

I want them to listen to me.

I want them to admit when they have no idea what is going on or how to treat it.

I want them to listen to me when I say their diagnosis doesn’t make sense. Like when I know my mom had 5 mini strokes in 3 weeks don’t roll your eyes at me when I say it’s a stroke not a UTI.

I need them to understand my son is an adult but he is managing 5 different doctors and it’s confusing. So I’m not a helicopter parent when I sit in dr appointments with him. And 2 years later no resolution and you don’t know his name when he arrives in your office let alone the 2 year history so don’t cut us off 1/2 way through when your memory is jogged.

Exactly. PP can have all of these things but they would have to pay for it. They say they "don't care what doctors make" but I bet they care what they pay.

Answering calls and emails and coordinating care take time. Pay a concierge physician and you will have that.

I had an orthopedic give me his personal phone number and take my phone call midday, and let me text X-rays to him to get a 2nd opinion within 1 hour.

I don’t even really expect that but dang that was amazing.

Most people don’t even know what a concierge doctor is.
