| We were overwhelmingly underwhelmed. The college looked like a dumpy boarding school with no buildings-just hills. Such a small campus with acres and acres of unused land. Tour guide flexed the open curriculum to express joy never having to take a math or history course again, yikes. Outside of the science center, the buildings looked dilapidated. The school seems to be way over investing in bio and chem while having little opportunity for much else. We also much preferred the town where Smith College was compared to snoozefest of Amherst. At least Williams or other New England LACs have charming architecture and once in a lifetime views. Amherst, Mass could be anywhere in New England, very unremarkable. |
| I have the same opinion. The campus is very gross. |
| We didn’t dislike to the extent the two pps did but we were definitely underwhelmed. Not helped by the very inarticulate student tour guide. |
| I find that campus pretty enough, if a little disjointed. Proximity to Amherst town is nice but agree with you Northampton way more appealing. for what it’s worth I was there last month when taking kid to visit UMass which is such an active and dynamic campus, so there’s certainly plenty of good energy in that area but Amherst is indeed a very small college campus. |
| Our child liked the campus, and the laid back vibe. Ended up getting into their ED school and withdrew, but it was definitely on their list (along with Vermont, WI, BU, NEU and some others) |
| We had a very nice tour. The campus is small but my kid loved the tour guide and liked the 5 school consortia. I’ve gone to a visit a few SLACs with kids and did agree that Amherst had a bit of a boarding school vibe but not in a bad way. If you are going to go to a small school having it feel intimate is not a bad thing. Kid much preferred to Williams as Williams just seemed more isolated. |
| Mt. Holyoke has the prettiest campus. Smith is nice too. But Amherst has a lovely setting in the Berkshires (wait till Fall) and ultimately it's a great please to learn. |
Williams is in the Berkshires. |
| It is a pretty underwhelming school overall, but it's somehow ranked very well. DC much preferred the academic opportunities and campus at Williams. |
Okay |
| If you hate it so much, don’t apply. I thought it was lovely. |
I didn't say it wasn't. |
| Our family had a good-not-great experience touring Amherst, but this assessment seems very uncharitable—the dorms are some of the best we've seen in comparable schools, and our tour guide was a geology major who had a ton of opportunities. Agreed that Northampton is a better town than Amherst. The view off Memorial Hill was more "unforgettable" to us than anything we saw at other New England LACs. DC ultimately chose to attend despite it not being a top choice at the start of the process, and has thoroughly enjoyed their first year. |
As in, Amherst is not in the Berkshires... |
You're an annoying person. They are allowed to have discussion on the underwhelming nature of Amherst, just don't engage if you wish to add nothing. |
