This hurricane looks like going to be a very strong one very quickly.
Having just returned from the Caribbean, I really feel for all the staffs at the hotel we stayed in and all of the natives who will get affected. Not a helpful post I know , just saddened. |
Cat 4 now?!? It was Cat 2 and hour ago and a tropical storm a couple hours before that.
Whoa! |
What is sad is that people still deny that climate change (rising ocean temps) have nothing to do with the fact it’s the earliest cat 4 hurricane on record. The denial on this forum and elsewhere about where we are headed re: climate is maddening more than sad actually. Maybe after it starts to upend the DCUMers travel plans will people wake up. |
People in Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois are waking up after the flooding there. There was a good article about infrastructure challenges (dams) out there in the WaPo. This is not going to get better. |
My grandparents grew up in Illinois/Iowa. Flooding has always happened, once a decade or two. But you're right that hundred year floods, five hundred year floods, are now happening with regularity instead of rarely. |
We don't know of it Climate Change or that climate varies over time, over years, or over decades, or even over millennia. But shouting Climate Change! doesn't mean that you now have the authority to impose new, arbitrary rules on us. So, let's play, this hurricane, what power has it granted you? What do you declare our new rules are? No more internet or cell phones, to save electricity and water from running and cooling data centers? No it is never that, just rules that inconvenience the average person, not corporate overlords or India or China. Oh and if you are next going to say what about the grandchildren, I will don't have kids--they are not carbon neutral. |
But we do know this?? The consensus of pretty strong among climate scientists. And yes, we should hold corporations and governments accountable. We can start out by maybe voting for people who believe it’s real? Who aren’t anti-regulation? |
Here is some info re: impact of warming oceans and hurricanes:

Heartbreaking, entire island of where we were just last week, is under hurricane path.
We escaped, but the habitants …v sad. |
This. I was jus thinking why are people just moving through life as if none of this is happening. Then I realized until it happens to them they can happily keep the blinders on. It's sad and yes maddening ![]() |
I'm glad you are concerned about climate change. Next time you book a vacation to the Caribbean, check the CO2 footprint of your flight. If you flew economy class from DC to Puerto Rico, your footprint is about 1500 pounds of CO2. For business class, it would be nearly 4500 pounds. Do you have any plans to offset these emissions? Waiting for the government or industry to offer a solution doesn't make a lot of sense if you truly care about this issue. Demonstrate that the issue matters to you by (1) evaluating your annual CO2 footprint using an online calculator and (2) taking actions to reduce your footprint. CO2 associated with luxury goods and exotic vacations is the easiest to eliminate, since these things are not necessities. Your trip to the Caribbean, unfortunately, offsets somebody else's efforts to reduce CO2. |
It’s impossible to not bear any responsibility in contributing to climate change, be honest.
I mean unless you live in the forest or a cave, you don’t use AC or heat or the washing machine even, if you aren’t eating only what you grew in the garden, yeah you ARE in fact guilty of contributing to the mess we are all in, So stop being judgy and telling folks they shouldn’t be doing this or that because I guarantee that you are as guilty as the next person in impacting our environment negatively. It’s impossible for us to turn back the clock or fool ourselves that ant substantial change can be made as a civilization that will impact global warming. This notion that if everyone did their part is sheer lunacy. We just couldn’t and wouldn’t if we really understood how much a sacrifice that takes. The more honest approach is to admit that. Accept that we have limited time to enjoy the lifestyles we choose and be grateful we have the opportunity to travel and live life to the fullest. The more effective approach to solving our climate prob is to figure out a plan of how we adapt to the changes. Stop trying to slow or end the changes that are happening - it’s too late and it’s happening but we can all come together to face it. That’s the solution really. Figure out a plan of how to live when in 15-20 years it will literally be hellish on the climate front. |
^ quite honestly I give it 10 years. I think the whole 2050 or 2080 figures are too generous. It is already sweltering. I think it’ll get worse year over year very quickly, quicker than what most people want to believe. I really truly think that in 10 years it will be very hard to go outside in certain seasons for most people. If it were me and I could custom build my house, I would make sure I had a very very nice underground/basement. That’s the way to go as the temps rise. |
How are we going to get food? Water? You cannot build your way out of this. |
