Stressed about unplanned trip!

Anonymous
DH found a “last-minute” travel deal that was too good to pass up. We both just found out our leaves at work were approved, so now we will be going, in a week! And I’m stressing out.

I feel like there are a million things to do (and not forget!) on top of life and work. I have things/clothes to buy for the trip, mostly for the kids. I have to figure out who will water all the flowers I planted thinking we wouldn’t be leaving town! I have to throw out all the perishables in the house, then figure out who will roll the cans to/from the curb. Of course DH will help, but I say “I” because I’m typing this and seeking help!

I’m frazzled. Help me not forget things! What do you to prep for leaving on vacation?

Make a to-do list. You will forget things and not put them on there, but they will come to you over the course of the next week. When you think of them, put them on there immediately, don't trust yourself to add it later.

Cross them off as you accomplish them.

Thanks! Starting a note now.

Yes having a list is good.

If this helps, I planned a trip months ago; it's something that we very much look forward to. And I've done tons of research. Yet here I am, one week from departure, and feeling the same kind of anxiety.

Things will work out. Promise. Enjoy your trip.

Stop papers. Hold mail or have someone collect both. We pay neighbor kid $5/day.

OMG! You sound like a ball of stress. How long will you be gone? A week or 2? Water flowers before you leave. The trash can be dumped or wait until you get back. Make a list for the important stuff and forget the rest.
We are leaving for the entire summer and I literally just pack and call the cleaner to come the day before we leave to come home to a clean house. We put the sprinklers on a timer and hope for the best. Why borrow trouble?

We take the dog with us.

Thanks! I’m so excited but so stressed, but glad to hear it’s the norm. Have a wonderful time on your trip!

Write down a list of things. And also know that unless this is a 6 month trip to Antarctica, nothing that catastrophic will happen...and there are always stores where you are going

Seriously, what even is a COVID mask?

You should have a packing list. Unplug any alarm clocks before you leave. Throw perishables in the freezer. Don't waste time reading these messages. Make a list. Get a pet sitter. Your plants are going to die anyway. Put bags around your indoor plants.

Write ✍️ important things to pack:passports, meds.

Sounds like you don’t have pets—that takes a huge hassle (and expense) off your list.

Bounceback at work.

Unplug computer and smart TV.

Turn down/off AC?

On the last day, empty trash and coffee maker. Be sure to lock up.

(Do you want to tell a neighbor?)
