DCPS Schools Requiring Immediate Modernization

Anonymous
There are many DCPS schools that haven’t been modernized that should be modernized expeditiously. I will list my choices below based on the condition of the buildings.

1. Malcolm X
2. Burrville
3. Whittier
4. Ketcham
5. King
6. Hendley
7. Seaton
8. Brent
9. Langley
10. Burroughs
11. LaSalle Backus
12. Leckie
13. Military Road
14. Plummer
15. Shirley Chisholm
16. Oyster

Whittier should be #1 on this list.

Is anyone else noticing that some of the recently modernized building are experiencing a host of mechanical and plumbing issues?

I mean yes but aren't some of these already slated for renovations and even begun the process? I wish they could renovate everything at once but that's not realistic

Many of these schools should have been renovated a long time ago. It’s not realistic but honestly all of Ward 3 was renovated before some of the worst buildings in the district were touched. Plus DCPS loves to push back renovations for unclear reasons.

Ward 3 schools have much higher utilization rates than the rest of the city. Nearly all are at 100% capacity.

This is why we moved from Ward 5 to Ward 3. Access to well-resources schools.

McKinley Tech High should also be on this list.

There are ward three schools getting renovated, additions before some of these other schools were renovated at all. Utilization rate was not the reason they did all of the HSs first. That is just an easy excuse to get Ward 3 done years before other areas of the city.

Nice try at rewriting history. Were you up on the relative needs 15-20 years ago when that round of renovations was planned and begun?

Shirley Chisholm has more classes than then they have room. my kids aren't there yet but I've heard the older classes are being held in rooms that are for offices

I was around 15 years ago and spent a lot of time in many schools. Some of the ones that are being renovated last or later were in really bad shape back then. Still not surprised all of ward 3 was renovated first. Then ward 3 complains their schools are overcrowded.

Ludlow-Taylor has classes meeting in offices and has for years. I don't think it's uncommon, particularly at the Hill schools where attendance has skyrocketed in the last decade. The one benefit of COVID was slowing some of the growth so that renovations/additions could catch up. L-T had ~300 kids 10 years ago and will have ~500 next year; it's not shocking that it's overcrowded. Finally getting an addition this summer.

DCPS does a crappy job with computing projections. They should always add at least 50-100 children to the projection to account for future growth. It would save them money in the longterm.

Brent and Leckie renovations are in the design phase, and Oyster is in the midst of renovations. Hendley was renovated within the past 5-7 years, and Plummer not long before that (Plummer also is getting a new cafeteria).

There are schools that have recently been renovated that still are severely underenrolled.
