Bikes on sidewalks

Anonymous
I am sick of getting run off the sidewalk by bicyclists who think they have the right to fly down the sidewalk instead of riding in the road. Every morning I walk my kid to school with my dog and every morning I have to go into the grass to let an entitled biker pass. I’m not talking about kids on bikes or even parents following their kids on bikes. I’m talking full grown adult men complete with go-pros on their helmet thinking they’re entitled to the sidewalk at rush hour. News flash, it’s illegal in MoCo to ride on the sidewalks.

I’m fine with bikes on sidewalks as long as they are moving at a reasonable speed and not going too fast.

I think it’s better and safer for them if they use the sidewalk alongside really busy roads rather than ride in the street. They just need to ride slower around people and give plenty of notice when they’re overtaking a walker.

Other than that, no issue with them.

Not true in the least.

In DC bikes are allowed on the sidewalks everywhere outside the central business district.

But I agree with op's point that it's wrong to be flying down sidewalks if pedestrians are there or there's not complete visibility that there are no pedestrians or turning cars nearby.

Bikes should yield to pedestrians on sidewalks as cars have to yield to bikes on the road - ringing the bell doesn't mean people need to leap into the bushes so bikes can keep pretending they are in the tour de france. In DC we couldn't teach our kids how to ride bikes on the paths and trails because the adult (mainly male) bikers were so insane

Are there any posted speed limits on the sidewalk?

Bikes, electric scooters. It seems like we have gone so progressive as to actually make it impossible for pedestrians to safely navigate the city. But I'm so glad bikes and scooters are safe and saving the environment.

Sometimes its because they have no alternative. I had to ride two blocks on the sidewalk this morning because the street was unsafe due to construction, and while they had made accomodations for cars, they had not made them for bikes.

I feel the exact same way. I rather have bikes on sidewalks then on the road because in my opinion, it’s safer.

Bicyclists can’t ever win with non-bicyclists. We don’t want them on our roads or our sidewalks, but they’ve got to ride somewhere.

As long as they are not going super fast and risking injury to me, the pedestrian, I guess it's ok. But in DC at least, they are entitled and think they own the road and the sidewalk.

Do they though? Do they have to?

This. Everyone needs to yield to pedestrians.

Are you suggesting we ban bicycles?
