I don’t know how many of you follow European politics, but in the recent European Parliament elections (held in 27 countries) far-right parties have surged.
https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2024/06/09/eu-election-results-hang-in-the-balance-as-polls-close https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/09/world/europe/european-parliament-elections-far-right.html I will say that I’m not sure the label “far-right” is still fully accurate for some of them; I think that the political spectrum is re-aligning. But still, this is a significant event. As someone with family in Europe, I don’t think I’ve ever seen as big of a gap between what mainstream media and politicians are saying voters want and what voters actually want. I wonder if the same thing is going on here. |

The consequences of the election are already being felt. Macron is calling for a snap election.
OP, I have family in Europe too and am watching closely. BREAKING: French President Emanuel Macron said Sunday he was dissolving the National Assembly and calling a snap legislative election after his party suffered a heavy defeat in elections for the European Parliament. In an address to the nation from the Elysee presidential palace, Macron said: “I’ve decided to give you back the choice of our parliamentary future through the vote. I am therefore dissolving the National Assembly.” The vote will take place in two rounds on June 30 and July 7, he said. The move comes as first projected results from France on Sunday put the far-right National Rally party well ahead in the European Union’s parliamentary election, defeating Macron’s pro-European centrists, according to French opinion poll institutes. https://apnews.com/article/france-macron-election-legislative-parliament-national-rally-07b742fe000170af8ee410e292bf23e2 |
OP here. Same. I’m watching this really closely. I don’t think people in the US understand what a big deal this is. |

Not just Europe. Canada as well......
Conservatives lead by 18 over the Liberals. It’s been 658 straight days that the Conservatives have led the Liberals in Abacus Data polling. If an election were held today, 42% of committed voters would vote Conservatives with the Liberals at 24%, the NDP at 18% and the Greens at 4%. The BQ is at 34% in Quebec. Since our last survey, the Conservatives are up 1, the Liberals are unchanged, and the NDP is down 1. Since the beginning of the year, we have seen stability in vote intentions with the Conservatives consistently in the low 40s and the Liberals stuck in the low to mid 20s. https://abacusdata.ca/conservatives-lead-by-18-evaluations-drop-trudeau-government-abacus-data/ Trudeau is sinking in the polls. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/10/justin-trudeau-election-politics-00134525 |
Just a precursor for what will happen in the US in November. |
This is because Canadian Liberals have gone far off into the deep end. |
| nationalism is one helluva drug |
Totally agree. The liberals in the US have done the same. Insane priorities. |

What is interesting is that the youth vote in Germany has gone sharply right. Just two years ago the left and center left were trying to get the voting age dropped to 16. I saw some coverage stating the Greens had lost around 15% of the youth vote they used to command.

I guess it is universal to blame liberals for the extremism of the far right.

This is what democrats here are loath to understand. They have overplayed their hand with trans rights, abortion all day every day and twice on Sunday and a country being overrun with illegal aliens. Head on over to the "Why 30-40 year old are Republicans" to see it happening in real time. Women are concerned about being erased, it especially pronounced and violent in the UK with trans activist and the loss of free speech. Making it a crime to say that one cannot change their sex! Anyone paying attention with Biden's EO that not using someone's made up pronouns is now illegal in the workforce. Completely ruining Title IX by getting rid of sex segregated spaces and protections. Illegal aliens changing entire cities in a mere 3.5 years. Groceries are still 17-20% high then back in 2020. But democrats are just tut-tutting us saying it is all in our head you silly girl. Crowing that this is best economy/presidency/no crime period ever! Similar scenarios are playing out across the pond and people are pissed. |
Who are the insane liberals in the US? Schumer? Biden? Jeffries? Because the progressive left is not in charge and none of their policies are permeating right now. |
Tran rights? That impact fewer than one person per state in the US? Abortion rights? Everyone just wants Roe. it is the right that has gone off the rails. The right wouldn't pass its own immigration bill. That isn't the left's fault. But sure, lets install a christo-fascist authoritarian regime. That will change things up. |
No one is buying what the left is selling. Choices have to be made. |
No, Canadian liberals have actually lost the plot. And the other factor is that Pierre Poilievre runs circles around Trudeau. If the US had a presidential candidate as compelling as Poilievre, the US election would not even be in question. He is killing it on the campaign trail in Canada. |
