Yu Ying Kindergarten waitlist

Anonymous
Is there something going on at Yu Ying? My son was initially waitlisted for K at #18. The waitlist has moved surprisingly quickly, and he matched today. I realize YY had 26 K openings for this coming year, but I'm puzzled as to why the waitlist moved so fast -- why are so many people declining an offer? I'm concerned we're missing something rather than getting lucky. Anyone have insight?

It's fine. People get cold feet about having to support Chinese at home.

I assume it has to do with the opening of the new building. Maybe they are ahead of schedule with the construction and can open more classrooms.

Sometimes they set seats aside for siblings, and the actual sibling numbers come in lower

I would think it's because you'll no longer have a guaranteed spot at DCI, only a preference. That tends to put people off.

is it moving as fast for PreK3?

Yu Ying kindergarten parent here. I believe there are going to be two additional classes this year. Also, be prepared for some uncertainty especially in the first half of this next school year. The new building is being built, but everyone will start out in the original building for the first 3 to 6 months. If you're the type of person who needs exact plans and can't handle changing buildings in the middle of the year, it could not be the right situation for you.

My neighbor is a teacher there. She says good things and it doesn't sound like there are any new problems. Just new capacity.

Agree with the above. With the additional classes taking students, more people will be getting spots, but that also means that more newbies will be declining spots.

Consider that Yu Ying is not the only school on people's waitlists. Students are getting called off waitlists at other schools to, and families may have ranked other schools higher than Yu Ying. So once they enroll in a school higher on their waitlist, they are removed from Yu Ying's waitlist.

Unrelated to YY, if bolded is true, get out of DC while you still can! The school you think is right for K may not be right for your kid or your family. The right MS for your kid may not be the feeder. You may try for Latin or BASIS and not get in. Then there's HS; no one has any idea what that will look like in 9 years. School in DC is to embrace the unknown.

Ha. THIS. My son is graduating HS (Latin) this year and I'm so relieved to leave this child-raising/DC school navigating season in my rear view mirror. I just laugh when people ask, "aren't you so sad that he's leaving the nest?". NO. LOL

No, the YY PK3 waitlist has moved very little since lottery day. IIRC, our number has decreased by maybe 7?

People are still interested in YY? I thought most were jumping ship. I don’t know if I consider YY a HRCS anymore.
