Like the title suggested. APS just finished this test and I’m wondering what the scores and percentile really mean? And yes I already google it but not quite sure what it tells me about my kid? |
Well, you are not alone there. APS hasn’t told teachers exactly what the scores mean either.
If I were an APS parent I’d want to know how much APS spends on this test. Because it’s not state mandated. As someone said the last time this came up, it’s “just for funsies.” |
Venture into the tiger den of the MCPS forum. We've been fighting over the NWEA MAP Math test for over 10 years. (But not the English test. No one cares about the English test.) |
It's used for 6th, 7th and 8th grade math placement. It's also used by elementary math coaches for remediation and tracking to see who is likely to fail the SOL and what areas they need to be retaught or practice. |
Placement for what exactly? Is this similar to math inventory they take in ES? |
Placement for middle school math. Pre Algebra or Math 6. |
They no longer take Math Inventory. It was been replaced by this test. |
But they took the end of year math test less than three weeks before the math SOL so how much remediation would be done? It appears my child also took it three times in the same week of May, getting the same score each time. Basic 6th grade math was a huge waste for my son -- in class they didn't get more than half way through what is tested on the SOL -- and he was bored with straight As in it. Which would make sense, because they didn't start post-5th grade material until February. If that test score keeps him out of advanced math next year, we will obviously parent advocate to have him moved up, but what a joke. As an aside, he has no scores for the reading since September. |
My DS is in 7th taking Algebra intensified and took this test as well. Not sure what it means |
It did not accurately predict who would meet (or not meet) the target score in my class. It did, however, take up what could’ve been valuable instruction and remediation time before the SOL. - upper elementary teacher |
I think there was just an error and it uploaded a few times. They didn't take it multiple times. I think if he is missing scores you should call. They took reading in Jan so scores should be there.. |
any ideas what the cut-off/percentile band they look at for Pre Algebra? Talking about a 5th grader entering 6th in the Fall. |
Thank you this is helpful! |
The letter we got last year said there were minimum scores they looked at to determine if a kid might be ready for Pre algebra SOL 550+, COGAT 126+, and Math Inventory (which they no longer do) 1046 |
