I want to make this recipe for next week, but I bought the italian chicken sausage for it today as I was at the store where they sell it and won't be back that way for awhile. https://deliciousdetour.com/sausage-and-kale-pasta-with-crispy-breadcrumbs/
Can I brown the sausage and freeze it to use early next week? My culinary skills are pretty narrow and my family prefers freshly prepared, so I don't usually don't cook meals in advance save a few hours or so. TIA. |
| Browning the sausage takes like 5 minutes. Why are you trying to do that? |
This. Just freeze it now and brown it when you need it. |
So just freeze the links then defrost? But any reason I can't brown and freeze? While it only takes five minutes, it would only mean one pot to clean when I assemble the meal for the family. |
I would freeze the links and then defrost. I think pre cooking and freezing would dry out the meat more. |
Yes. |
| You bought chicken sausage instead of real sausage so it's not going to be right anyway. |
Exactly. |
It definitely tastes better if it’s browned on the day you’re serving it. PP was also correct to point out that chicken sausage tastes different than the original recipe. Not a problem if your family likes chicken sausage. But it won’t be the same as the original. |
| The entire recipe is super easy and takes less than 30 minutes. You're going to waste more time freezing and defrosting vs just buying it later and cooking it right away. Plus Italian chicken sausage?? They sell regular Italian sausage everywhere. |
You need the crust from the pan when you cook the kale. I guess it's possible you could cook the sausage and the kale and freeze the whole thing, but the kale and sausage need to cook together. You're also going to need a skillet for the breadcrumbs. |
This. Chicken sausage doesn't crumble. |
| Freeze, defrost and then brown. You could brown now and freeze but then the end product will not be good. Browning adds flavor and texture. Both will be off if you freeze browned sausage. |
I've made this dish many times. Half the family doesn't eat pork, so it's always chicken or turkey sausage for us. |
| It’s going to be dry and bland either way. |
