Does McLean High school have a Science Olympiad club?
McLean High School was absent for regional and state tournaments. https://www.duosmium.org/results/2024-02-10_VA_centreville_regional_c/ https://www.duosmium.org/results/2024-04-06_VA_states_c/ Anyone one knows what's going on? If a Mclean HS district student couldn't go to TJ, will this student still have chance to participate STEAM clubs in McLean HS? |
| I heard they traded three Longfellow kids to TJ for future Class of 2029 draft picks. |
| Science Olympiad is not a big thing in HS. There are other clubs. |
| They are probably banned. It happened to other schools in the past. |
What can make a team being banned? |
| I would be really surprised they are not there as Longfellow has a very strong team. |
| Isn't McLean on that list? In 27th place (last) at States. |
|
my DC was on LMS team and chose not to continue at MHS. 1 - incredibly time consuming. 2 - there's no point in doing it if you cannot win states. Time is better spent on other activities with better dividends and less time spent.
I'm perfectly happy with their decision and support it. |
| If it's a fun way to study science, it's worth doing. The dividends are fun and better performance in science classes. |
You obviously have zero experience with SO. |

TJ ranked 21st in 2024 national.
Mclean HS students didn't waste time any efforts on this. Not bad. https://www.duosmium.org/results/2024-05-25_nationals_c/ |
My kid did SciOly at Longfellow this year. 7th in the Nation! Go Lancers! My theory is that all the Longfellow SciOly kids go to TJ... so no one is left to do it at McLean. My kid is in 7th but seems like almost all the 8th graders he knew through SciOly that applied to TJ got in. |
McLean is on the regional and state list. Ranked 12 and 20 (2 teams) at regional and 27 at state. I think your concern might be misplaced. |
Only 27 teams competed at States so you don't know what you're talking about. Their ranking of 24 in every single event indicates that they didn't actually send a team. Same deal with McLean Silver at the regional event. McLean Red participated but didn't do particularly well with their 12th place finish. What is actually astonishing about the Centreville Regional Tournament is that Fairfax HS won, beating all 3 TJ teams. https://www.duosmium.org/results/2024-02-10_VA_centreville_regional_c/ Fairfax HS came in 3rd at the State tournament - TJ and Langley went to Nationals. https://www.duosmium.org/results/2024-04-06_VA_states_c/ |
| McLean got first place in "scrambler" at Regionals, which would qualify the school at States for just that one event -- the twelfth place finish means they wouldn't be able to send the whole team. My guess is that something came up and the one or two people who did Scrambler for McLean wasn't/weren't able to make it down to Charlottesville for the State competition. It's a haul. |
