My MS kid has always had As and Bs. In MP3 he had one or two Cs. Now in MP4 he has 2 Ds and an E. We are trying to figure out what the issue is and he is working with a tutor this summer.. Question: if average of 4 MPs is C or better, is that passing even if you have an E in one quarter? What about an overall average of D? What is the cut off?
In HS, I believe they take the higher of the first 2 quarters and thensecond 2 quarters for semester grades. Is MS the same? |

Middle school classes taken in middle school only have quarter grades, no semester or final grades.
High school classes, whether taken in high school or middle school, assign semester grades according to the chart in this document: https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/ikara.pdf |
| If he only has one E, I don't think he's in danger of "failing" in the way you think, i.e. he could be held back a grade. The Ds are passing in MCPS for either middle or high school, so really it's just the one E to worry about. And since it only happened in on marking period, there's no way he failed the entire grade. |
| Is it due to missing assignments? |
| To get an E in MCPS you literally have to do nothing at all or not show up. As long as you don't cuss the teacher out everyday you should be able to get a D. |
| Grades in middle school really do not matter. Unless they are taking classes for high school credit, like Algebra or a World Language. If they fail one of those, they would need to take it over again. No one has to retake 7th grade Science because they failed it. They just move on to 8th grade. |
I don't think MCPS is allowed to fail kids for non-academic behavior. |
| 2 are for high school credit- Honors Geometry and Engineering. |
Also you may not even know you have an E if the teacher enters the grades in parentvue on a 3 week lag- surprise! |
NP here. Back to OP’s concern … Don’t worry about the middle school courses. The grades really don’t matter. The high school courses do matter. They will appear on the student’s transcript. HS courses are semester based. CD = C for the semester and CE = D for the semester (DE = E, but doesn’t apply here if he got at least a C in 3rd quarter.) Courses can be retaken to improve the letter grade. If he has a D in one of the courses, he should definitely retake it during summer school this summer to raise the grade to at least a C. If he has semester Cs, I would let it go and focus on whatever the underlying issue is this summer. Courses taken in MS appear on the transcript, but the letter grade is only included in cumulative GPA if it helps the GPA. In the big picture, a blip in middle school isn’t notable if the rest of the transcript is As and Bs. Best wishes for sorting things out. |
OP here. Thanks- this is very helpful! |
| Also - the grades for High School classes taken in Middle School and either be included or not included in the High School GPA. If they will make a GPA higher, they are automatically included into the calculated GPA, if they would make it lower, they will not. Either way, if the overall semester grade is passing, they will get the high school credit. The bigger issue is do they grasp the content well enough to go onto the next level. If it is math, you may want to consider having them repeat the class next year or over the summer. For tech, no worries unless they want to go into a tech field. |
OP here- thanks, Im thinking the same. Focus on math over the summer to get back what was missed second half of the year. Engineering - just cut our llsses wherever we land. |
