When do APS middle school students learn if they pass their SOLs? New to the system here & kid keeps saying "I don't know." TIA |
I think they only tell you right away if you are in the “eligible for retake” zone, otherwise it’s some time mid summer. |
They will know ASAP if they failed. |
My kid was able to find out his scores day-of in MS. |
What school? Why do you say this? It’s not the policy at least in elementary where you aren’t notified of failure until early August. I can’t speak to MS. But I’d be shocked if APS was nuanced enough to have a different policy for MS than for ES. Please note, I do understand the failure but eligible to retake zone. I am not referring to that population. |
Both my kids were given their score the same day in MS |
Thanks, OP here - do they tell the parents via some app or just the kid? |
At WMS, teacher told the kid. |
I dont think there is an official policy difference, but middle school and HS teachers just tell the kids. Parents are officially notified in the summer. |
My MSers have never been told their SOL scores by their teachers at DHMS. Neither was in danger of not passing but still. |
Did they ask? If so, the teacher will likely tell them. |
No, they did not. I understand they could, but I do not like the emphasis on SOLs by their teachers anyway. I don’t want to send them marching to school with directions to find out this information because it communicates to them that it’s more important than it is. But, I do not understand why APS is not transparent with family — students and parents — immediately about testing results, even if it’s to say these are preliminary subject to scaling or whatever. It’s incredibly frustrating for families who need to this information and would use it to know there is a potential red flag or to adjust their summer tutoring or to just generally be aware immediately. Why should students have to demand it? And in ES, that is ridiculous. |
My elementary student's teacher said she knew the scores but that was she not allowed to share. Last year we got the scores the last week of July.
It's very frustrating, because if my kid isn't doing well and hasn't mastered something that was tested, I'd like to use the summer to beef up that knowledge. Especially in math. Instead 5-6 weeks of the summer are gone before they even share it. FCPS does not do it that way, so I don't get it. |
My 6th grader was told that they passed the math SOL and in what category by their teacher but not the exact score (which I’m totally fine with). The teacher also told her entire math class that they all passed. In elementary school we never knew until late July. I’m good with this because my 6th grader is anxious, but I don’t want more emphasis on SOLs than there already is. |
What does that mean? Same day? Same week? |
