What is this meeting? |
Something to do with the activities, including the focus groups, surrounding hiring the new superintendent? |
It's one of the standing board committee meetings. The members discuss initiatives to improve communications in MCPS. |
It was just the board members asking student leaders a bunch of questions to learn more about their opinions on a variety of topics.
I felt like it was poorly constructed and it was notable that not a single one of the student leaders in the meeting was black. So much for MCPS's so-called commitment to diversity. |
BOE members Evans, Ovens, Yang, SMOB Saaed, BOE analyst, BOE communications coordinator, and BOE assistant listening to an amazing panel of MCP MS and HS students engaging in discussion and advocacy on issues that they experience in the school and issues that ALL have been affected by in the county and beyond. |
some topics included later school times, narcan-opiod |
7 students at board table, 3 on zoom, 2 in audience in Board room |
Not to disparage the students who attended, because they were wonderful, but many of these students were the students who have already been active on the SMOB advisory board and/or the BOE's own intern, Nico D'Orazio. So honestly, the group was comprised of a bunch of student leaders who the board regularly hears from anyway. |
Can they discuss bathrooms being locked up in the upper schools? |
Unfortunately, the students didn't. |
This is a really interesting point, as is the person who commented that none of the participating students were Black. Do you have a sense for how the student participants were recruited? Maybe the BoE can look at how to diversify the "pipeline" of kids who participate in these events. |
I'm sure the BoE and all of MCPS want to hear from other students but these are the ones who agreed to share, present. If you are a parent, why don't you get YOUR kid to come forward? If you're a student and didn't share, or you are an adult that doesn't have a student, stop disparaging. |
Might be helpful to embed the meeting here.....

The invite was not widely shared. It was shared directly with student leadership and then principals hand-selected their faves. |
