Where do Above average Kids go to College from Jackson Reed?

Anonymous
Question is in the title but my child will likely end with a 3.8-ish student with a mix of grade level, honors and AP courses. I know there will be plenty of kids with lower GPAs and course loads but there are quite a few 4+ GPA students with close to full accelerated schedules. Wondering what we could reasonably expect. Thanks!

Look at this year's Instagram for 2024 graduates and you'll see that JR kids go everywhere. Last I checked it, over 200 students had posted news of where they are headed in the fall and it included more than 120 universities, including every Ivy except for Cornell (and maybe there is one of those now too).

Thanks and yeah I have looked at the Instagram I just don’t know what grades the kids have to go to ivies (not my kids goal) vs UMD, etc.

My kid is probably in that category you describe. Ivy was never a goal and had a 4.0 (weighted, so not all that great) going into Senior year. Senioritis ensures she'll graduate below that. She applied to lots of schools early action because we weren't convinced she'd have much luck with so many kids with higher GPAs and more impressive extra curriculars. Remarkably she was accepted at 14 schools, waitlisted at 3 and rejected by just one. Accepted at places like Penn State, University Park, VT, IU Bloomington, Maryland (but only starting in Spring Semester 2025--uh thanks, no thanks), UMass Amherst, UConn, etc. No hooks. I think JR kids get in all sorts of places. Good luck.

UVM used to be a big draw to J-R kids like yours...a lot of kids now seem to be headed to Boulder.

Smaller options include Miami of Ohio, College of Wooster, Elan.

Based on acceptances and commitments this year at JR, it seems the popular schools are Penn State, UofCO Boulder, Tulane, Wisconsin, Oregon

Your student has access to this information through Naviance.

Is the 3.8 w or uw? That is a huge difference. Also, I wouldn't trust Naviance with TO and them reporting SAT scores. My DC did poorly on the SAT and got near perfect on ACT, which wasn't reported, so it would looked skewed. I didn't find it that helpful.

He would be transferring in so no accounts yet unfortunately. Debating between staying at private or changing to JR.

And GPA weighted. It’s lower than he would like after a year at private.

Actually all except Wisconsin.

OP here and hoping it will end up higher but trying to be conservative for comparison purposes since I don’t know how hard the honors and AP (or regular for that matter) classes are there.
