Supplemental Tryouts

I am fairly new to travel soccer, can someone explain to me supplemental tryouts? This is after the other tryouts have taken place so what are they exactly for and is it worth taking your child to one?

Thanks.

Dear Parents,

We hope this message finds you well. We would like to express our gratitude for your patience and understanding as the coaching staff at SYC has been hard at work to place all kids appropriately following the largest tryouts in SYC history.

In our commitment to ensuring the best development opportunities for every child, we still have some openings on our teams that we are looking to fill. To finalize the team placements, we will be conducting a supplemental tryout on May 30th (Schedule | Location and Times are attached). This additional evaluation will help us to make sure that each child is placed on the most suitable team for their development.

We understand the importance of this process and appreciate your support. Your child's participation in the supplemental tryout on May 30th will be instrumental in finalizing our SYC teams.

Thank you once again for your patience and cooperation. We look forward to seeing your child at the upcoming Supplemental Tryout.

Best,

SYC Staff

For SYC this is to fill up their 3rd or 4th team for an age group. I guess even though they had the "largest tryouts in SYC history" they weren't able to fill all the openings on the teams.

Could have been the largest tryouts but you have to expect that folks declined if they didn't get the offer that they wanted and left some gaps. On the other side I'm sure others that weren't happy with offers received by other clubs also reached out for a tryout so this is an opportunity to fill teams that may still be in need of players. That area also has many military families that may be moving into the area so it's another opportunity to have them brought in. This is not new and all clubs do it, this is not specific to SYC.

The first and second team for many of these clubs have already been formed.

Supplemental tryouts will be for the lower level team. It's all a money game, I mean number game at this point.

Too many kids declined offers and now they need to fill a team.

Most clubs just finished theirs in last week or two. I'm sure you'll see it soon for other clubs needing to fill some gaps as offers are accepted/declined. Our current club has hosted them in the past as well. I've seen it at times where they publicized it and others where they didn't but still had a good number of non-club players show up. Depending on numbers, it could be a training with current team or a regular tryout with smaller numbers.

Sounds like in SYC's case they are trying to ensure they can fill a fourth team or even beyond at some agre groups, and then there is always the disgruntled player who is looking for a new opportunity surfacing every May after formal tryouts. I would guess SYC has been in contact with them and there may be girls pushing for the first teams even. Remember this is year one of a new top flight league, they will be open for business for a while longer now as they build the brand awareness of GA

Supplemental tryouts are when a club doesn’t have full rosters after the first tryout cycle. It could be that not enough players came out or existing players left that they weren’t anticipating or they made a lot of offers but players declined for other clubs. It’s probably not for the top teams and it’s normal.

all true except for when you are adding a team/joining a league, so not quite

If you want to join SYC then i think it's worth it, if you don't want to join SYC then it's not worth it.

They clearly say the purpose "we still have some openings on our teams that we are looking to fill."
