From the principal:
I am writing to inform you about a serious incident that occurred today, May 20th, at our school and the steps we took to address it promptly. This afternoon, two students reported finding a live ammunition round (bullet) on the floor of the Boys' Physical Education (PE) locker room to a staff member who immediately notified our Security Team. We called the non-emergency police line, secured the locker room, and conducted a thorough sweep of the PE locker room, including all lockers and trash cans. After dismissal, the Security Team again checked the PE locker room including the bathroom stalls, shower stalls, floor area, and trash cans. No additional concerning items were found during these sweeps. We also contacted the parents of the students who initially reported the incident and notified the Office of School Support and Well-Being (OSSWB) about this serious occurrence. We are currently reviewing the camera footage for any additional information. At this time, we have no evidence indicating a direct threat to the campus or any individual. There is no information suggesting a student threatened harm to anyone in the building today. Incidents like this underscore the importance of maintaining a safe school environment. I urge you to reinforce with your child the seriousness of bringing anything to school that could be considered a weapon. As stated in the MCPS Student Code of Conduct (https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/students/rights/), weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on school grounds, and students face severe disciplinary consequences and potential legal violations for such actions. I want to commend the two students who reported this incident and our staff for their prompt and professional response in following established safety protocols. Their actions enabled us to address this matter swiftly and efficiently. Thank you for your cooperation in discussing this issue with your child. Together, we can work to maintain a safe and nurturing learning environment at Tilden Middle School. If you have any questions or conce rns, please contact the school office at 240-740-6700 |
| There are adults that are in the PE locker room too. Is Principal going to ''reinforce with staff the seriousness..." as well? Is locker room used at other times (after school or weekends) by non-students, i.e. county sports leagues? |
What? |
Stop it. You know damn well this was most likely a student. |
There was an incident a few weeks ago with a teacher with a weapon in their car I believe. So no reason to automatically assume student. |
No one uses the locker room but the kids |
What do you mean by use? How do you know no one else is in the locker room? PE teachers (who are adults) are in the locker room. Other teachers, maintenance staff and who knows who else that works in the building could also go in the locker room, whether they *use* it. |
| When I went to Pyle we used to trade bullets and knives all the time. The teachers saw us doing it. |
That was a building maintenance staff member, not a teacher. |
Whoever, it was someone who works inside or around the school. |
|
I want to copy and paste this and send it to Principal Mooney at BCC high school, as an example of how INFORMATIVE a letter to parents can be.
There have been so many serious safety incidents at BCC, and every time parents complain, Mooney claims Central Office doesn't allow him to share any information. As a result we're constantly in the dark. It's so frustrating. |

But they are not locked at other times. FWIW, my child plays AAU basketball and they practice at night at a different MS. I regularly see adult men coming to play/practice right after the kids' practice is over, around 9 pm. So it's not impossible than someone might end up in the locker room. |
