Can anyone recommend a place? The places that I've looked at are all small. Is there anything that's large that's almost like a college for old people with tons of social outlets? I do not want a place where we have to buy in at $500k or whatever it is? Anything out by Reston/Loudoun? Not interested in Maryland. Thanks for any help. |
Have buy-in fees increased to $500K now? Oh my. |
Yes, they’re quite exorbitant. Pretty much out of reach for normal people, unfortunately. |
I believe Brightview Senior Living is a month-to-month fee structure. Good luck in your search.

They do. My parent was happy there. |
They are usually structured as 90% refundable though. In CCRC's the 90% first gets applied to your AL or nursing home care and any balance to your estate. It is how CCRC's are able to commit to lifetime care. It isn't out of reach for many people who owned their homes and can use the proceeds for the buy in. |
I thought most ALs were month to month, given the shorter average tenure in them. Obviously you have to be able to prove ability to pay. Are you finding ALs with buy ins? |
Most independent and assisted living places are just apartments you rent, although some have community fees of a few thousand dollars. In Loudoun there’s Waltonwood and Ashleigh at Lansdowne and Sunrise and many others. Ashby Ponds and what used to be Leisureworld in Lansdowne are the only places I know where you have to buy in. |
Brightview. No buy in and lots of activities. |
(Hit "enter" to soon.) And there's one in Dulles. My parents are there and are happy. |
Brightview, Sunrise, Kensington.
These are all good options but they do not quite have the resort-style cache that those other larger sprawling buy-in campuses offer. |
My Dad lived at the Hermitage in Alexandria for several years and there was no buy-in, just the monthly fee based on the resident’s level of care. It’s now owned by Goodwin Living and called the View Alexandria. |
Is there a Brookdale unit near you? My mom used one in NYC. |
