Mcps middle school assignment - only allowed to use CNN, NPR, and Pew

I’m as liberal as they come, but this jumped out as a really narrow pool of sources for a current events project…particularly for honors modern world studies.

I wish they would directly address the spin both sides put on the infotainment media and policy shops.

Again: I’m liberal. But I’m Gen X…the generation that was bred to cut through the crap and use commonsense and grit to get by.

Find out why the restriction was made. If you already have, what was the stated reason?

Anonymous
That's odd. NPR skews left, but CNN employs tons of GOP spokesmodels to appease the right.

No such class in MS. Maybe this is HIGH (Historical Inquiry into Global Humanities)?

I think the sites are generally safe and easy to navigate for students.

Maybe they do but this is not the assignment for it.

No paywall

What grade and what was the assignment?

I think it's just a way to keep the number of sources manageable, and within the realm of sites that are freely available.

A "right leaning" source like the WSJ would presumably be fine for another assignment, but it's paywalled and therefore a bad choice for a MS assignment that relies on information being available.

Has nothing to do with being "liberal"

And by the way, CNN is not "liberal" it has been both siding it and crapping on Democracy for years now.

While those sites might lean "liberal" they are more factual then most which for a school project makes sense for anyone with a brain.

"Commonsense" we are not living in normal times. Commonsense has gone away clearly given the republican party is the party of the "Unified Reich". Do not tell me it is not they would have taken it down if it was a "mistake" They have not and anyone with a brain knows why.

So spare us your fake "liberal" outrage.

This is not about "liberal" vs conservative news anymore. It is about reality and not reality or Democracy vs Facisism Dictatorship Christian Nationalists.

Correct.

For those that have an MCPS library card, you can go through their portal to read paywalled news sources.

Yup it's a way to limit sources that are factual depending on topic but kids usually also do a lesson in that class on how to be skeptical of sources and be aware of the perspective of the source. Your child may have neglected to tell you that part.

But MCPS hasn't implemented a free account for all students, so...

The far-right hates CNN, and they seem to pander to the right in the hope of offsetting their criticism. The right won't be happy with anything short of propaganda like Fox. CNN is pretty terrible and definitely not liberal. Better off just reading the paper.
