Any K teachers that can provide insight on class lists?

Anonymous
Our child will start K this fall. We registered her at our home ES. When do classes typically (and teacher assignment) form? July? Early August?

Who decides teacher assignment? Principal?

You will find out your kids class late August.

Classes are split by birth year/age and math/ reading ability. The highly able kids are usually split into 2 groups by age. Then the classes are evenly split with highly able kids (by age), kids who need the most help, and then sprinkled in with everyone else.

Some schools use a process where students rotate through several K teachers the first week, so they can observe the dynamics and settle on balanced classes.

This. The week before school when you go to drop off school supplies. They don’t want you to have time to complain/campaign for a change.

Kindergarten? LMFAO.

We always take a vacation the week before school starts, so we typically find out on the Sunday before school starts when we get back into town and check our mail.

How would they even get that information for kindergarten? Kids don't take math and reading tests before starting.

Usually based on the orientation when the teachers take the kids on their own.

There is a bit of adjustment for 1st grade and then it usually stays pretty steady from then on.

Yes, I know this. My question is when does the school work on creating these lists/assignments? As soon as prior school year is over? Later in summer?

That poster is either trolling, using old information, or dialing in from one of the smallest elementary schools in the county. In practice, particularly now that MCPS is not doing kindergarten orientation the spring beforehand, schools know very little about the kids before they arrive. If a kid is in the MCPS system through PEP or Head Start, they'll know that, but the vast majority are unknown.

That's why some schools have begun doing the "swap" method described above.

^^^ OOPS. I meant the poster claiming there was some deep science was probably trolling, not the poster saying you'd find out in August.

I can't understand why they got rid of kindergarten "roundup" in the spring. It was so helpful for teachers to get a preview of the incoming kids and thus try to balance the classes, find out who might need help with accessing special services, give the kids a chance to meet teachers and other children and see the school, give parents a chance to connect with PTA, daycare, after-school activities, etc. etc. etc.

Probably later in the summer, given that they don't have full enrollment information at the beginning of the summer. Sometimes our assignments are in ParentVue a little early, but it's always the week before school. I doubt they're sitting on created lists all summer.

Because not all teachers in Spring roundup will teach same grade or at same school, and new K enrollments come in after spring roundup
