PG county schedule compared to surrounding counties

Just trying to get a handle on next year and looked at the calendar. PG is closed 30 days next year, (1) 2-hr late arrival plus 8 additional 3 hour early dismissal days with up to 4 of those being virtual asynchronous, which means 4 days off school in addition to the 30 in reality. So 34 days off plus 5 half days.

None of the surrounding counties have this many days off.

Frederick- 30 total. no early dismissal and 0 asynchronous days
Carroll- 21 days off + (4) 2.5 hours early dismissal days (0 asynchronous)
Anne Arundel- 27 days off + (8) 2-hr dismissal days (0 asynchronous)
Howard- 28 days off + (11) days 3 hour dismissal " "
Montgomery- 28 days off + (5) early dismissal days " "

What the ever loving? Is this standard for PG or something new? This is why I constantly feel like Im scrambling and my kid is always off when talking to friends in other counties. Compared to Carroll we have to cover an additional 5 half days + 9 full days. Granted they start on the 3rd but same last day which is only 5 days difference so its still an additional 4 full days and 5 half days.

According to your Math, when you factor in that PG starts earlier, there is not a huge difference besides the early dismissals/late days which does NOT count as non instructional days. MD schools are required to have 180 days of school. PG has 180. Sometimes we just want to hate PG and will find any reason to do so.

How are the virtual asynchronous not counting as instructional? They are graded on it and told they need to do the work.

Virtual asynchronous days are counted as instructional days, that's why they do them.

All public schools in MD have 180 days of school. Not sure how your math is mathing.
PG does they half days as asynchronous because it gives the teachers time to get caught up at the end of the quarter without having to babysit a bunch of kids who are there on a compressed schedule.

AA has same start and end date.

HoCo starts same day, ends 2 days earlier.

And I realize that it sounds petty but from the employer perspective there is a lot more grace given for "summer" or "winter break" or "spring break" vs having a random day off especially when their kids arent off.

And yes, virtual asynchronous is devious and should not be allowed.

Right but the kids are home all day so its still requires 8 hours of leave versus 5 hours. The addition of asynchronous days and the 45 minutes of work they provide is BS.

Why are you counting days "off"? That's so odd. They are in school 180 days.

Listen, it's not easy, but it's what it is. What employer do you have that they're this inflexible? Also I always trade with other mom's of my kid's class - I'll take this random day off and you can send your kid over here, and vice versa. It takes a village.

They arent inflexible. I actually have a super flexible job- its just constantly taking pieces here and there is taxing. I have no leave left. Always kind of cobbling together. Unfortunately, I dont know what other parents do. SAHM dont want to switch, most have grandparents, and the other moms are still working while kids are at home has been my experience so they dont want another kid around.

And I do think that the virtual asynchronous days are whats contributing since its literally 180 days in school but 4 of those are at home when compared to other schools plus other half days which for ES are basically worthless since its 3 hours in school.

I think we will just need to find a HS kid in the same district and have them babysit. I just didnt realize how much coverage we would need outside federal holidays and the big breaks (winter/spring) where we use camps for some of the days.

There are some camps that are open on the random asynchronous days if that would help you. Although high schoolers are always happy to make money

Calendars are probably the most hotly debated of all school district decisions. Someone's always unhappy.

Bowie. We already do 3-day camps for winter and spring break so its not like we aren't using them already. The virtual asynchronous days are just tiresome IMO. It's essentially a full day off but the kids are supposed to be logged in for 3 hours and get graded on the work but they are home and my K kid finishes his work in 45minutes.

Hyattsville has camps on asynchronous days, it just starts at 10:30, so kid does work (also quickly) and goes to camp while we only ave to take 1-2 hours off
