DH might have an amazing job opportunity that would mean moving to Dallas. Two older kids are in college and our youngest would finish high school there. I am very happy in Bethesda and planned to stay here forever, but I’m try to keep an open mind. Would you ever move to Dallas? Where are the areas I might like to live coming from the DC area?
We are wealthy, but have zero interest in social climbing or any kind of fancy scene. |
| Texas is fabulous and Dallas is great. Great food, great Mexican American and international culture, and more. If you like the Bethesda vibe look in one of the more liberal areas or it will be quite a culture shock!!! |

University Park if you want a good public in the city but it is a bubble, white, and insular - Highland Park is the only HS in that district. UP/HP is its own 'town' inside Dallas. That would be the most bethesda-like in terms of your peers. There is also Preston Hollow with Hillcrest in DISD.
Lots of good privates but I don't know how admissions chances are in mid-hs. Other burbs have good districts but they are racist. |

The weather is awful. Once it gets hot, it’s brutally hot—you won’t even want to sit by or in a pool.
Plus: tornadoes. It’s not near anything. If you currently enjoy day trips or weekend trips to other cities, the bay, the ocean, the mountains, a lake, etc. you won’t find that down there. Be prepared for a very long drive or a flight. Lastly: it’s become a hot area, so it’s crowded and overpriced. Be prepared for traffic and pricey homes. |
Where in Dallas? Because Dallas is pretty spread out. If the office is in Plano or Frisco or Irving or Arlington (which people will all call Dallas) then living in Dallas proper probably won't work. There's little to medium public transportation, but the car is really king. If you don't need to worry about schools, then you have a lot of options. Here's a guide: https://www.dallasites101.com/neighborhoods/ |
| Why are the hottest areas the fastest growing? |
^^Sorry, I misread and see that your youngest will finish school there. As a PP said - UP/HP are the best, but it's also a very expensive area. Richardson ISD is also good. And there are also lots of good private schools - Ursuline, Hockaday (girls); St. Marks, Jesuit (boys). |
Do you not read the news? You are insane to move to Texas right now. Dallas is a hellscape of yuck. |

I would take a Dallas summer over Virginia summer any day of the week. It’s hot but it’s a dry heat and everything is super air-conditioned.
Removing politics from this thread, Dallas is actually a really great place. There’s a very good art scene, amazing restaurants on every corner they do food right in Texas! You’re not constrained to Dallas county Denton county to the north and Fort Worth county to the west provide a lot of amazing housing opportunities, you will get a lot more bang for your buck than you do here, even though prices have gone up considerably in recent years. |
Um, no. It’s already going to be in the 90s in the coming week. Then it will quickly be pushing or north of 100 for a lot of the summer. It’s blazing hot and miserable. Plus: tornadoes. And: weird insects, snakes, etc. |
Notice that you describe the other burbs as racist, but Highland Park is a white, insular bubble. Hmmm... |
I should have explained that many of the burbs are actively pursuing racist policies. HP/UP is not but it is baked in via the original restrictive covenants. |

How old will your high school student be?
My Dad had a great job offer and moved our family from CT to Dallas. I was a senior. It was really rough. Later in life, my father apologized to me and said I should have stayed in CT for my senior year (we had family friends that offered) Also -- are you really moving to the city of Dallas? I have discovered over the years that lots of people say Dallas -- but really mean various towns outside the city. |

Yes it's hot. The reason there is air conditioning EVERYWHERE. Silly people.
Dallas has some great places to eat. You can literally buy a BEAUTIFUL mansion for pennies. The people, especially the natives, are so darn nice. A high energy place that has everything and anything you can think of. And pools come with a covered veranda now. You don't need to be in direct sun. You can tell who has never been there. They repeat what they THINK it's like. The suburbs surrounding Dallas are very nice and welcoming. Texas women are unique. Not stuck up like DC. And they don't snub newcomers. I love visiting there. You will not be disappointed if you go. |
Huh? A beautiful home in a nice neighborhood in Dallas is $2-4 million. Notice I said DALLAS. Sure, you can probably buy a large home one hour outside of Dallas for $600k. But you can also probably buy a large home one hour outside of DC for $900k. |
