Fire contractor who is chronically late?

Anonymous
I have a contractor who does good work for fair prices but he’s late everyday. Like he tells me he will come at 10am and shows up at 2pm. Because of the lateness the projects take more days than they should. Let him go or keep him for a bathroom remodel? I also am stuck at home waiting not knowing when he will show up.

Let him go. We had someone like this. At first it's a mutually respectful relationship. Then the chronic lateness, and sometimes no show at all. It completely soured us and turned the end of the project a nightmare.

I would be worried that he is on drugs.

You don't need another late remodel that you know will be late. Especially for a bathroom.
Finish whatever he is doing, inspect it carefully because getting him back to fix something may be futile. Don't make final payment until you know it's done right and the little fixes done.
I speak from experience.

If you haven’t started the project then definitely don’t hire him. If you’re already in the middle of it then finish and don’t have him back for anything else.

Sorry to piggyback, OP, but we have this issue where the contractor did the bulk of the work and then stopped showing up. The last time he was here was August! He texted in March that he'd come the following week to fix things but then didn't. At one point can we just move on with someone else to get things fixed/finalized? And how do you go about finding someone to do that? Fwiw, we didn't pay the second/final payment.

You should have moved on by now

Move on. If you want to, take pictures / video / create a list of open items per the contract and put some of the payment aside just in case.

If / when they ask to come to do work, do not be available the 1st time. Your job is not important enough for them to prioritize - do not jump through hoops to make it work for them.
