MCPS school lunch

Tell us how it really is! In elementary school. Should we plan to pack lunch from home instead? No allergies.

I packed. I can't even comment on the food but both kids said the lines were so long that they didn't want to buy. They would spend most of lunch on line.

How's middle school lunch? Food and the lunch lines.

I packed lunch because the food isn’t tasty. My kids tried it a couple of times and didn’t like it so it was always a home packed lunch from my family. We are still packing school lunches up through high school.

It's normal mass-produced food, with some attempt made to be healthy.

As others have noted, the biggest issue is wait times in cafeterias, which is itself a function of overcrowding in schools. Even if a school is able to convert arts and music rooms to classrooms, and to add portables, the core utilities of the school are still designed for fewer kids, and that includes the cafeteria.

If you love your children, pack.

My kids packed through elementary. Based on combo of pickiness and not wanting to wait on line. I have one in MS who now buys school lunch. Prefers the convenience of not packing and bringing and basically rotates through a few of the regular meals each week.

Packed in ES and MS with some $ in the account so kid could buy occasionally. Food is okay (mass produced standard), but kids preferred skipping the line and in MS having flexibility to eat in a teacher’s classroom for a club or lunch help.

Mine rarely bought in elementary. In middle and high school, they’d often buy a treat to go with a packed lunch. Ie chips cookies or ice cream

Kids hate MCPS lunches.

The kids who eat school lunch often throw the entire thing in the trash. I've seen it several times while volunteering. Their parents have no idea they're going an tire school day without eating after breakfast. They need to make better lunches. They're not eating it and food is being wasted.

Students will say they want to buy lunch because all their friends buy school lunch. And parents are exhausted and give in.
Any movement to provide "healthier" school lunches?
What do students with food allergies do if they must get lunch at school?

Can you school compost if they haven't started already? PTA led if a PTA exists.
