Hi - We are looking at housing in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area and we're interested in any feedback about the academics at Bayard Rustin. My son is 2 right now so we still have a few years but we want to buy a place where we can stay put for the next 7-10 years so elementary schooling and general community is a consideration.
We are interested in the Chinese immersion/magnet program, if we're able to get in. Is the academic rigor different for the magnet program vs general population? Are the students generally pretty competitive, with parents sending their kids to tutoring or other enrichment? How is the neighborhood/surrounding community around the school? Thanks in advance! |
| Your chances on the magnet are very slim |
| There is no magnet program. There is a partial Chinese immersion program |
| The immersion lottery is countywide without an advantage for being in-bounds for the school. I don’t know much about BRES but at some of the immersion schools some people feel there can be a weird school within a school dynamic, particularly if you didn’t win the lottery. |
| What neighborhood are you looking at? BRES pulls from a pretty large boundary and doesn’t have one cohesive community. It’s a large school with portables. Agree with PP that the immersion program creates a ‘school within a school’ environment. |
? it has portables? It's only like 5 years old something. They were supposed to have built it to allow for growth. That is insane. I would not worry about "school within a school". I have two kids: one went to a magnet and another not. Neither felt it was "a school within a school". All the clubs and activities are the same, and recess is for everyone. |
