Around 6 pm, Graham says he has 5 more Dems in favor of the new Feb 8 proposal (which includes some promise re DACA voting - but from what I can tell doesn't lay out a DACA solution). And the CT Dem senator was just on tv very very cautiously saying he's consider it. So looks like they could be up to 56. Don't follow politics much routinely but doesn't his seem like it ends tonight? How hard can it be to get 4 more?

What is so frustrating is that there ARE enough moderates in the Senate to get things done and move the country forward. There are 60 votes for DACA protection with robust border security, there are 60 votes to fund CHIP as well as the community clinics where 40% of CHIP kids receive health care, there are 60 votes to fund the military adequately and there are 60 votes to pass a budget that would fund programs that both Republicans and Democrats value including basic research, infrastructure spending, spending on the State Department and disaster funding.
McConnell needs to get out the way and let them vote on these issues. He has consistently tried to pass everything he possibly can with Republican votes and with the help of vulnerable Democrats like Joe Manchin. How about actually voting on legislation that bipartisan groups of Senators have crafted. The country is not hard right or hard left, why not govern from the center? I actually think our President would get more done and see better approval ratings if they tried this.

The thing is many American families CANNOT go 3 weeks without pay if they don't pass a CR. The military is only paid through January 30. They may not care about anyone else but if theybf*ck with the militarybthey will really anger the base. Decent senators do not want people furloughed and going without pay for weeks while this grinds out when they could pass a CR and spend the next 3 weeks coming to some agreement.

Both sides failed to realize that in a shutdown everyone looks bad. Even if we all have really strong political beliefs, when it comes down to it, my party's moral superiority doesn't pay my bills. People need their jobs.

Agree - which is why I equally fault republicans in this mess. Both sides are supposed to compromise. Obviously neither side compromised in the current situation or we wouldn't be in a shutdown.

CHIP ran out many weeks ago. The GOP did not want to take it on because they were busy giving money to the rich.
