because whether Duke, Northwestern, or Hopkins is 10 is life changing. Can you imagine the shame of a Stanford grad realizing that Princeton is higher on a poster's list? What if a kid gets into CalTech thinking it's number 5 when it really is number 6? |
Penn still has great med, law, econ, psych, etc. Chicago is all-around strong in business, med, econ, law, etc. JHU is definitely more extreme on having a concentrated strength |
Wharton absolutely needs to be ahead of Caltech, Columbia, Chicago. Penn (ex Wharton) needs to be ahead of Northwestern and Duke. I would put Duke ahead of Northwestern. JHU should be a bit higher as well. |
1. HYPSM 2. Wharton 3. Caltech, Columbia 4. Penn (ex Wharton), Chicago, Duke 5. JHU, Brown, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Cornell |
+1. A+ and A are the elite of the elite colleges, and the distinction between A+ and A is an important one to make. I’ve always thought of Columbia and Caltech as borderline elites: Columbia is a poor man’s HYP as their departmental and professional school rankings are certainly HYP level but the school doesn’t have the WASPy feeling of HYP, and Caltech’s niche dominance in STEM outweighs its overall lack of public recognition. |
Can we stop splitting UPenn Wharton and CAS into two??? OP is asking for Top 10 universities overall, not individual departmental distinctions. Unless you agree to put Colorado State’s Geology alongside HYPSM. |
Why? Seems like USNWR often changes its ranking formula in order to jumble up their list to get more eyeballs and clicks. Would be bad for USNWR business, if the top 10 was the same every year. Was a joke when they listed Chicago at number 3. HYPSM should be alone in the top 5 every year until they are knocked off their respective perches. USNWR lost credibility with me with the #3 Chicago ranking a few years back. Chicago should be somewhere in the 6-10 range. No way Chicago deserves to be at number 3. This is not an attack on Chicago but how many students would choose Chicago over Stanford. 1 in a hundred maybe. |
+1 |
Student preference shouldn't be factored in rankings. Many reasons why a kid will choose one school over another, like Cali weather or grade inflation, etc. |
My list...
1. HYPSM 3. Caltech, Columbia 4. Wharton, Chicago 5. Brown, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Duke 6. Cornell, Penn (ex-Wharton), JHU |
I have a hard time fathoming why Brown or Dartmouth, under most circumstances, would ever be above Cornell or "ex-Wharton Penn." |
Penn (ex-Wharton) is no better than Duke, Northwestern or Cornell |
Because no Wharton kids have to live with the trauma/stigma of attending an inferior intra school within Penn. So points must be deducted |
Good list, but I would bump Penn (ex-Wharton) to group 5 |
