Is the preference for UVA over UMich a DC area thing?

Huh?

What's the "huh" about? Half of Michigan's 48,000 undergrads are from out of state. And in-state students definitely don't have to be in the top 10% of their class to get in, unlike at UVa.

For starters, UM has 29,000 undergrads. They do not collect class ranks, but 86% had GPA >3.75/4, the highest range.

One can't make a comparison to UVA because UVA administrators have trouble with reading comprehension and report on their CDS an average GPA of 4.32 on a 4 point scale.

you are right about the number - I read the article that said 48,000 undergrad and grad students. My mistake. Still more than half the students come from out of state.
https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2019/10/23/university-michigan-enrollment-rises-led-out-state-students/4070517002/
and you do have to be in top 10% of class to get into Uva. Not at Michigan. Not enough smart kids in that state to fill all the slots if they had those same standards as Uva.

Nobody disputes the percentage of OOS kids at UM. That is intentional. It is a draw to bring educated and skilled worker to the state. But you keep repeating statements without any support.

Since we cannot compare GPAs, in part because of UVAs inability to fill in forms correctly, we will have to go with test scores.
% of Students with ACT 30-36 24-29
UM- 80 17
UVA- 79 17

Tell me again much easier the standards are at UM?

Anybody think that UVA will eventually go private?

Never

The preference is all about in-state tuition and proximity to home. That is it.

If you are in state, realistically, you are from top 10% of your class. If you are from out of state, you are a 3.8+ and 1500+ student.

Once again, no one looks at world ranks. You are looking at the wrong USN&WR category. UVA is always in the top 2, 3, or 4 place of public schools in America. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public. UVA was ahead of Michigan for 27 years until USN&WR decided to fold in the Pell Grant data, which UVA has no control over.

Once again, YOU don't look at world rankings and post the exact same message on this forum for the 100th time because you have apparently never left Virginia.

Not true. No one uses world rankings to make college decisions. You are falling for the commercial hype. These lists make money.

But UVA is ahead of Rice, Tufts, Dartmouth, Notre Dame and Georgetown in these rankings. These rankings are super accurate. Everybody uses these rankings.

NP - I'm in the field of college counseling. The world ranks are not used. The USN&WR public university rankings are used because publics can't be compared to privates for a variety of reasons. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public. I've never heard of anyone using a world list. Ever. Never seen a parent bring me one.

1. I'm sure someone/somewhere has used a world ranking to inform a college decision.
2. USN&WR is an altruistic and unassailable beacon of wisdom?

It's been around since 1983 and is considered the gold standard. The other publishing outfits realized there was money in making up these lists so WSJ, Princeton, etc. all joined in. The world rankings are very new and just another way to get you to spend money to buy a publication or a listing service. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._News_%26_World_Report_Best_Colleges_Ranking

Are you the USN&WR sales manager?

They ALL do it to make money. They make money because someone thinks they are getting eyeballs. If they are getting eyeballs, then someone may be using it to inform their decision-making. If not why would anyone buy advertising?

Do you think the oldest is always the best? Still using Netscape? In your (and many others) opinion, USN&WR is the best. That is fine, but it is still an opinion.
