Where do A students from top local privates go?

In-state vs out of state stats for UVA are readily available https://research.schev.edu/enrollment/b12_report.asp (OOS have higher math SATs)

Moreover https://admission.virginia.edu/faq
We have pledged to maintain a 2/3 majority of Virginia residents in our student population, but 2/3 of our applicants tend to come from out-of-state. As a result, our offer rate for Virginia residents tends to be much higher than the rate for out-of-state students. Last year, we admitted 39% of the Virginia residents and 22% of the non-Virginians. You can see date from previous years on the Office of Institutional Assessment website.

OP. Yeah it was Dartmouth or Cornell. Chose Dartmouth because we had a couple of angles. Recs should be strong and ECs very good. No idea on essays. We think they are good LOL. If we get UVA we are happy because half price of privates. Naviance also looks good for W&M, GW, Wake, Davidson, Emory, Tufts, UVA, Gtown, and Hopkins. Cornell doesn’t look impossible. Vandy and Northwestern looks bad as do Brown, Yale, and Penn. We have an EA with merit in the bag already.
3.8 from top private is something to be proud of OP. But 33 ACT is low compared to peers with similar GPAs. First group of schools are very possible (the ones in bold are possible if subject test scores are strong). Last group not likely.

3.0GPA/28ACT from a big 3. Got accepted into UVA as recruited athlete. Some of DC’s team mates at UVA, according to DC, had 2.5GPA/900SAT from public schools.

Cornell was Human Ecology...higher admission rate.

But you seem grounded so what do you think is realistic for schools. Yes we had internal counselor, naviance, and private counselor input. We came to the decision or where to ED. We were told we had about a 33-50 percent at the Ivy but He did not get in. So where do we stand with RD now?

DD's school used the rule that every <20% admit rate school should be considered a reach, no matter what. It's really too unpredictable at those colleges. The schools she considered for her match list included NYU, Wesleyan, Reed, Oberlin, Kenyon, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, and Bryn Mawr. We're Virginians, so UVA was on her safety list and she didn't consider any other publics.

Did she get UVA? OP here.

DD was accepted early at her first choice, so she withdrew her other apps. According to DD (take it for what it's worth), several strong DC and Maryland residents from her school were rejected at UVA while weaker Virginia students were accepted. Her sense is that UVA is being exceptionally selective with OOS applicants. It is hard to compare the heavily weighted public school GPAs with unweighted private school GPAs. Their median is something like a 4.2, which means typical accepted students got several Bs on their transcripts and is probably closer to a 3.6/3.7 unweighted. And if that average is pulled up by OOS students, then it is a notch lower for instate students, even from Northern Virginia. With decent essays and good teacher recs, I'd guess your DD is in a solid position for UVA.

No, median for entering student in class of last fall was 4.37. 75th percentile was a 4.47. I can tell you from first hand experience that no one in Fairfax publiuc schools with "several Bs" on their transcripts gets into UVA.

Highly unlikely. If true, they are going to be way at the bottom of the entering class. Even the bottom 25th percentile median for entering class of fall 2019 has a 4.21 (yes, i know top 3 doesn't weight) and 30 ACT (top 75th percentile is a 4.49 and a 34 ACT. The bottom 25th percentile SAT is a 1340, so a 900 is really low. https://research.schev.edu/iprofile/234076/University-of-Virginia?

The link you provided does not show GPA and test scores of recruited athletes. You should check out the UVA football team GPA and SAT score

Aiming higher but RD round is brutal so little nervous. Full pay…do they really care? Not legacy, URM, or athlete. Diverse in terms of middle eastern but had to check white.

To answer your Q in heading: In my very humble and limited experience it depends on the guidance counselor. I almost think it would be better at Wilson vying for the attention of 2 counselors than get what we have been experiencing at our private. I definitely do not think going to private is a ticket to anything, but for the tuition I do expect counselors to know kids and to be somewhat responsive. A good counselor will do their best to advocate for your kid, actually read the essays and provide thoughtful comments. Instead there is too much personal bias that seems to go into how they treat, respond to, and advocate for different students. There is no minimum professional obligation for them to do their best for each student. When a class has good results they get the credit. When a class or student does not get the outcomes they were expecting, well then you probably didn’t have a balanced list. I wish they were not a necessary part of the processs or held to a minimum set of rules and procedures.

For your post: 3.8 and 33 is not super competitive for ivy without some other major asset. Unless there is something remarkable your DC will probably end in the 11-30 category to be crass but simple.

Thanks helpful. OP Here. I think she would be happy anywhere between 11-30. Hoping for UVA at least (in state), Tufts, Emory, maybe Hopkins with an outside shot since not pre-med. Doubt she will get any ivies (rejected ED from one). Maybe outside shot at Cornell. Applied to Human Ecology which has a higher acceptance rate.

my DC with a 3.73 and 35 ACT got into a school into a top 25 ED. Took most challenging course load. Not URM, athlete etc

Did the counselor advise applying ED to any ivy? The ACT score seems low to me to go that route.

No advice against it. It was up to us. Used ED for a long shot. Happy to take UVA if he doesn't get in. Let's see on UVA. Half the cost, can't beat it.

Okay updating while waiting on Ivy day.
WL Gtown
WL Top SLAC,
In at Top SLAC with generous merit
In couple more top 30 southern schools
In top 70 with merit.
In W&M.
Rejections from Hopkins and UVA.
Surprised thus far with only UVA rejection. Similar stat kids from same school in. But prefer the top SLAC with merit anyways.

Will update next week...waiting on four Ivies and couple top 15s. Will be hard to beat the SLAC with merit.
