Seiously, got a kid with 3.8 UW in a challenging schedule, 33 ACT, and good academic ECs that was rejected from ivy ED. Accepted EA to a private. Aiming higher but RD round is brutal so little nervous. Full pay…do they really care? Not legacy, URM, or athlete. Diverse in terms of middle eastern but had to check white.
To answer your Q in heading: In my very humble and limited experience it depends on the guidance counselor. I almost think it would be better at Wilson vying for the attention of 2 counselors than get what we have been experiencing at our private. I definitely do not think going to private is a ticket to anything, but for the tuition I do expect counselors to know kids and to be somewhat responsive. A good counselor will do their best to advocate for your kid, actually read the essays and provide thoughtful comments. Instead there is too much personal bias that seems to go into how they treat, respond to, and advocate for different students. There is no minimum professional obligation for them to do their best for each student. When a class has good results they get the credit. When a class or student does not get the outcomes they were expecting, well then you probably didn’t have a balanced list. I wish they were not a necessary part of the processs or held to a minimum set of rules and procedures. For your post: 3.8 and 33 is not super competitive for ivy without some other major asset. Unless there is something remarkable your DC will probably end in the 11-30 category to be crass but simple.
Thanks helpful. OP Here. I think she would be happy anywhere between 11-30. Hoping for UVA at least (in state), Tufts, Emory, maybe Hopkins with an outside shot since not pre-med. Doubt she will get any ivies (rejected ED from one). Maybe outside shot at Cornell. Applied to Human Ecology which has a higher acceptance rate.
