| ^^ Not the PP to whom you’re responding, but many of us who turned down our IB middle school for Charters like Basis came from DCPS elementary schools where the dramatic achievement gap was woefully apparent at an early age. We have plenty of direct knowledge and experience to inform our decisions. |
+100. In addition, the gap just widens as you go higher in the grades with more complexities of subjects. |
Yes, because there are no decent public DCPS MS options besides Deal and Hardy, and possibly DCI and Stuart Hobson. Those zoned for programs other than Deal and Hardy who aren't in language immersion ES charters generally head to BASIS, a program with poor facilities and a curriculum that really only works well for around half the students who are enrolled. They head to BASIS because they can get a spot, with Washington Latin only admitting around 15% of those applying without older sibs. We're in a real mess on MS in DC EotP, and parents can't seem to do a darn thing about it individually or collectively, year after year. City politicians and ed leaders don't give a darn about EotP gentrifiers' middle school woes, and never have. BASIS the easiest way out for most, though often not a particularly happy or manageable way out. Some UMC parents feel guilty about sending a student to a school that looks, and acts, nothing like the middle schools they attended. They come her to...delve into an existential defense of BASIS. Same old. |
| We've heard enough from the BASIS crowd. Any Brookland, SWWFS, Jefferson, Eliot Hine families care to weigh in? |
|
Jeff decides who gets to post what, not you, mate.
It would be good to hear from some of the Maury IB families at Eliot-Hine. Trouble is, they're bigtime boosters, so you might want to take any rave reviews on EH here with a grain of salt, or a bag. We've known half a dozen of the Maury IB families at EH this year well for many years. They're not talking about discipline problems at EH, although they're real. |
not really, which is why every single MS thread gets steamrolled by a handful of BASIS tiger mommy wannabes. God forbid anyone speak positively about a DC public school that's not BASIS, right?
|
| What about DCI? |
Not a DCPS school but thanks for playing |
Oh brother. You're bad at snark. If you're going to be needlessly insulting, could you at least be a little bit clever? BASIS isn't DCPS either, but that isn't stopping anyone. |
And every MS thread always turns into a Capitol Hill thread/vent. |
| This thread’s subject pertains to above grade-level kids not attending Deal or Hardy. Of course it becomes a thread about Capitol Hill. |
Elliot Hine had a good showing at the middle school DCPS informal swim meet at Dunbar last night. My kid is at a different DCPS middle school, but I noticed that Elliot Hine kids had a decent size team and tried hard. GO DCPS!!! |
Silence since this thread started. There is your answer. |
DCPS doesn't do middle school well period. Just look EOTR. MS is a citywide problem. |
|
True but next year new montessori middle and second latin will open. Some new blood.
Also pretty soon it won’t just but the Hill, Shaw and Bloomingdale and Brookland and noma will start having to face this .... |
