How to say you went to Harvard (elite school, HYPS, etc)

Anonymous
I usually lie and say I went to a local state school (think, U. Delaware) instead of saying I went to Harvard, unless it's for a job interview or something other than casual conversation. Sometimes I say I went to Montgomery College or UMBC. it's so much easier. And those are really my peeps over there.

This is the most idiotic thread ever.

This. I went to a very medium state school. I don't think anyone has asked me where I went to college other than probably a few times in my very early 20s. People who went to Harvard, Yale, or other impressive sounding schools find a way to work it into the conversation, even subconsciously. By talking about college in general, or talking about an old roommate at college, or talking about how they studied Spanish for a little bit in college but didn't hold on to any of it... they somehow make it more natural for their conversation partner to say "oh, where did you go to college?". Truly.

Truly, this is your own insecurity speaking. Truly.

Lol i'm not insecure at all! I'm agreeing with the above poster who points out how come it's only the Harvard/ Yale/ Princeton types who seem to get asked where they went to college so often that they need to come up with alternative ways to deflect the question? How come people who went to Christopher Newport University don't come across this question regularly? Because someone who went to Harvard WANTS you to ask them where they went to college.

It's like the joke, "how do you know if someone ran a marathon? Don't worry, they'll tell you!". Marathons don't come up organically in conversation very often, but a proud marathon runner will find a way to work it in, or get you to ask them if they like to run road races. People who went to Harvard are the same way.

What, are you a royal pretending to be "just like us"?

It's not that big of a deal. Us lowly state school grads can handle your celebrity. Just answer the question truthfully on the rare occasion you're asked. Anything else is insulting and weird.

So weird that I don't believe you. No one who went to Harvard would say they went to MCC or UMBC

Exactly. Open your mouth and say "I went to Harvard." If someone has a problem with that, that's their problem.
