What did your DC wedding cost?

Bride's parents here. We paid for our DD's Indian Hindu wedding. (Groom is American). 130K. 270 guests for wedding and reception.

An additional 20K for all pre-wedding and post wedding events with smaller number of guests

In 2019 are people still expecting the bride to shoulder the bulk of the costs?

Most of my friends got married in the past 10 years and more than half paid for their own weddings. The bride's dad paying is definitely not a sure thing anymore.

This. Got married 15 years ago. We paid for it. Parents did not contribute a dime. 30k, 100 guest in CT. I wanted DC, but it would have been more expensive. No longer married. The wedding was way more expensive that the divorce.

Interesting.

If we see just the per guest cost, the American weddings are almost as expensive as Indian weddings.

The American brides spend more on their dress, cake, table centerpieces, table linen and plate setting, and flowers. Booze and entrees are very pared down. The number of people invited is quite small and the dancing happens for a few short hours.

Indians spend more on top shelf booze with open bar, abundant food with multiple entrees, appetizers and multiple desserts (not counting the cake), dj and dhol, and huge number of guests. The dancing goes on for quite some time. And usually, the after party also goes on for a long time. The clothing and jewelry for bride, groom, bridesmaids and sometimes even the groomsmen are sourced from India and that is not hugely expensive. You can usually source all clothes and jewelry (not real gold and diamonds nowadays) in less than 5K.

Revive a 4 yr old thread to share that you spent $150K on a wedding. Cute.

Wedding a local church and a reception at a nice hotel in Alexandria but it was pre-instagram, under 10 k all in.

I have the cheapest, I’m sure. But also the saddest. Gay couple who married as soon as it was possible out of fear that if we didn’t marry on the first available day after waiting in line for hours that we might never have the opportunity.

Total cost: whatever the filing fee was for the license. Total people in attendance accounting us and the court officiant: 3.

Just set a budget and then work around it. Shouldn't be more than 20% of your combined annual income. If you've debt, it can't be 10% of your combined annual income.
