Best school for highly gifted and talented, "quirky" kid?

I'm another person this poster called "hallucinogenic". I think this person posts all over DCUM...they also call everyone paranoid or something along those lines. What a great way to debate (not) -- to name call people with other ideas.

Not true for any of the kids in my son's MoCo elementary who were two years ahead in math and are now in the TPMS magnet.

You're joking, right?

Some publics and magnets can offer a lot that privates can't or don't. Think about it.

My kids have done private and magnets. Although the dumb question (maybe it is a joke like PP said) doesn't really deserve an answer. Think about the range of privates in the area -- some are actually pretty poor.

Yes, of course, I did and so did my child. The only time I went to a public school was Pre-K. I still remember the smell of the stinky bathrooms. When I think of public schools -- I think subpar. Even the WP had an article yesterday saying the "beloved" public in Mont. Co. aren't as good as they used to be and have been slipping for the past 10 years.

You're pathetically recognizable: you pretend to be an elitist who hates public schools in many threads, but you misuse the word "hallucinogen" and "auditory" all the time. Exactly what private school taught you to be so ignorant?

I doubt your a mom, and you may not even live in DC. The NYTimes recently had an article about people who troll for a living. Usually sad, middle-aged, lonely guys with a lot of pent-up hostility.

With sincere respect for your many talents, this one's for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpWpdcR63ms

My understanding is that most of the IM7 kids from Cold spring went to Algebra in 6th. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Not quite right. Let me refresh your mind.
The lady who states public schools smell of stinky bathrooms is the same psychotic character with a daughter at Yale on an athletic scholarship that has trouble keeping her knees together and thinks redshirting leads to statutory rape. She frequently hallucinates, has paranoid ideation and mistates posts by attributing her words to others.

Algebra 1 in the magnet middle school (Takoma Park Middle School) is not pretend Algebra. The consistent and habitual high performance of these students in Mathcounts, AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12 and AIME year in and year out suggest that this is not the case. Interestingly, middle school students from the D.C. area privates are no where to be found in these national and international competitions. Where are they? Takoma Park Middle School Magnet is part of the Montgomery County Public School System.

If your child is talented in Math there is no other D.C. are private middle school setting remotely comparable.

What about Pyle MS? High school Algebra 1 is taught there, too. And there are "advanced" language arts and access to high school language?
But, I hear that the rigor is just not there.

I just worry about the size and the lack of rigor. I have the impression it's a little bit like Lake Wobegon, and that the rigor is just not there.

Well, I was the poster that asked the question about St. Anslem's that led us down this recent path. I'm crossing our fingers that we will get as much accurate information as possible before we make our decision and determine the best fit for our son. He loved the open house, but spent the vast majority of his time talking engaging with the high school teachers. For the record, our kids have been in private schools both and public schools in the ares and private schools abroad, and the most frustrating thing is not having enough accurate information up front---from either of the two sets of schools. And, having to spend loads of time advocating for what our ds needs. We haven't found the perfect -- or even a good fit -- yet, and are trying our be optimistic.

But, you're no freak. You're "highly paid" with a claim of a daughter at Yale and another following your legacy path to Ivy (Penn was it not?)

"My understanding is that most of the IM7 kids from Cold spring went to Algebra in 6th. Correct me if I'm wrong. "

That could certainly be true for Cold Spring, you would know better than me about that. My kid went to one of the language immersion programs and it definitely wasn't true for the kids at that school who went on to TPMS. My understanding is that the kids who take Algebra in 6th are a definite minority at TPMS -- this from DS who goes there.
