Thankfully it looks like the administration is not going to appeal the vote. I am hopeful that the negotiations go smoothly and MV can set a precedent for charter unionization, at least in DC.
A snippet of the communication sent out to MV from the executive director: Our mission will continue to be our school’s highest priority when we meet at the bargaining table. Our values will guide how we engage in the upcoming collective bargaining process. In the spirit of inquiry and empathy, we will seek to understand the issues our staff most care about and the ways in which they desire a greater voice in decision making. In our negotiations, we will continue to promote both a model workplace for educators and the highest quality experience for our students. In organizing the staff, the AFT now too shares responsibility for the continued success of Mundo Verde. We hope that by working in collaboration with our staff and their union, we will identify concrete ways to strengthen our school and further support the well-being of all our students. |
So is the union-buster going to refund his fees so the money can be spent on students? If he indeed charges $3000/day, a week of his time buys an apple a day for every kid at the school for a year. |
| Any update beyond the email from the Executive Director? Have negotiations begun? How’s the atmosphere at the school? We’re trying to decide about MV8. |

MV8 won't be unionized to begin, only the P st campus.
No further conversations about negotiations yet, but a staff member in the union told me that the union has sent dates for negotiations to the administration and is waiting to hear back. Atmosphere seems good. It is Expo / celebration of learning time and everyone is pulling together. Assuming we get some positive communication about negotiations, I think current parents are mostly planning to stick it out and hope that negotiations go well enough and teachers are happier next year. The ECE program is really solid and I don't think you will be sorry to enroll, but I don't know your actual options / what you are choosing between. |
