Hope Solo - Youth Soccer is for Rich White Kids

They also charge only $850 per year, according to their website. Not bad for a club that puts teams in the USYS Regionals. I wonder how many teams of rich white kids they beat who pay 3-4x as much as they do.

didn't see the club fee amount listed anywhere but I did notice that the coaching fee was part of team fees including tournaments so that may be higher and even out with those other clubs that pay their coaches directly.

Unless they are nearby---it's pretty much irrelevant. Those having the $ coming up with fees most likely have a transportation problem as well. And, there is no way they could drive in DMV traffic a few times a week unless it was a neighborhood club.

Hope Solo is right...Arlington Soccer won nationals with a bunch of rich white kids.

The picture on homepage is photoshoped, I am sure. No way a team like ASA could be diverse. Richest, whitest club going.

Seriously, if you have more than two kids and are not making $150k/year, forget about playing in a top league. Who can afford travel every other weekend or trips across the country three or four times a year for a showcase event?

Keep the game local. Have more id camps. Keep the game simple until u14/u15. It is insane that people feel the draw to put their ten-year-old in travel.

Also, this is less about race and more about economics.

But isn't the realty then that it is a false top? It is the top of the rich kids league, but not necessarily the best players available.

That's a Bethesda South team. Only came over to Arlington a couple/few years ago.

As an ASA U9 dad with a kid on one of the top two teams, is that what we can expect in later years, ASA importing new talent, rather than developing the kids who have played with the club for years?

I don't think it matters if you are ASA or any other team, recruiting and importing appears to be very commonplace; the only way you would know is if you were tracking player movement over the team timeline.

The parents their would get he reality check of a life time if the clubs were free . they would form a new club and price the better kids out of it too just so Jonny and Kim could play travel with three friends and not be shown up by Carlos or Maria on a daily basis. Only other thing I would add is in this area its not just white kids. Its the well off Asian and middle eastern kids too. it just so happens the DMV is such a well off area we are blinded by fact that there is a whole lot better quality of talent in the lower income latin communities that don't get the the exposure for multiple reasons and thats fine with the well off families who can afford to create this protected false dream for their kids to believe they are elite when they simply are not. and this my friends is why the USA isn't dominating the world in soccer yet.

Woooo sah!!! Finally!!! Someone hit the nail on the head. I want to be your friend.

I’ll add for good measure... my DD plays on a select team. Cost is moderate; ~$1100/yr. Not too terribly expensive but priced too high for some. Everyone on the team is white w/UMC parents happy to pay that with no travel. They lost some girls to club teams and the remainders were just out there for fun. The coaches recruited some Hispanic girls on “scholarship” and wouldn’t you know it... the team wins every game and when those girls aren’t available to play, they lose by 5-6 goals. It’s shameful what pay to play has done to our culture. Every time I see those girls out there, I’m stoked. They are good and they have natural, raw talent that should be showcased.

They are the absolute worse for this. Never known to be a development club. They are a recruitment club.

Talent in Europe is cultivated by the clubs. We don't have strong clubs here. Pay to play is really irrelevant -- it's not like people in strong soccer countries are giving $$ away to cultivate other people's kids.

Apples to oranges. European youth clubs get transfer fees and solidarity payments when their kids go pro. US clubs do not, so have to charge high fees.
