The city council protect their choice not to be contributing members of society. Instead they are allowed to camp on city streets, collect their welfare and socialize all day.
Why hold a job?

Indeed - why? can't afford housing in the city anyway.

I think the problem is that SF is too quick to let people who are mentally ill in a hostile way stay on the street.

I think New York, Boston and Chicago have better strategies for getting hostile homeless people off the streets.

I rarely run into a poorly behaved homeless person in most cities, but I always run into them in San Francisco.

Letting people who are mentally ill in that way fester on the street is an abdication of responsibility.

Yes, in New York, Boston, and Chicago, winter gets homeless people off the streets

I was just in SF; it had been 20+ years since my last visit. I did see quite a few homeless people during my visit, but I saw homeless when I was there years ago, too, so that was nothing new. I didn't see anyone openly using drugs or pooping on the streets, and we walked and rideshared all over the city (and no, I didn't go into the Tenderloin). Overall, the city is still as wonderful as it has ever been, except that the traffic getting in and out of the city and in some of the areas is much, much worse than it used to be.

I go to SF with some frequency, alone, with husband, and with my young kids. SF has definitely gotten grittier in recent years. I like it, we are even low key considering moving there. But I think people who deny that SF has changed are either oblivious or politically motivated.

Yes, he said that the homeless people are pollution there and is going to get the EPA to go after them. Lovely.

I live and am raising my daughter in, SF. Yes, it's gotten grittier. But living here is still awesome. Putting up barriers to the homeless will not solve the problem. It may move them, but they'll still be homeless. We need better healthcare, and we need, essentially, insane asylums, to be brought back. We need that while we figure out why so many more people are crazy and unemployable and then to address those issues. We need prisons to stop warehousing inmates and get aggressive about rehabilitating them.

We were in SF this summer. I thought there were less homeless people there than in downtown Dc or many areas of NYC. Have the people complaining about homelessness in SF been to Franklin Square on the weekend?

I can't afford a house in Chevy Chase. Should I just expect homeowners to tolerate me living in my tent in the sidewalk in front of their home and allow me to poop in their front yard?

Or should I move somewhere I can afford?

They have to clean up the homeless problem and deal with the health and safety issues like junkies shooting up on the streets and human feces everywhere
