Reading way too fast, I thought you were saying that you lost your sheet.

I assume these days that Mrs. Simpson's is a hoods-free environment?

Mrs. Simpson's as in Wallis and Edward? Weren't they fascists in the 30's? And didn't the British aristocracy think they were pretty tacky, despite his royal blood? Please tell me it's a different Mrs. Simpson.

Wallis Simpson died in 1986. I highly doubt there is any relation to the Mrs. Simpson who runs the Dance Classes and cotillion.

Not a desire to honor her and her sense of style?

If your child is invited to participate in a cotillion program, you should take it as a compliment and either accept or decline the invitation graciously. If you don't know how to do that, then perhaps your child really isn't learning good manners at home.

Really? Should I also send a hand-written no-thank-you letter for every other solicitation I get in the mail? How is being "invited" to spend $300 on dance and etiquette lessons any different from being invited to spend money on gymnastics classes or music classes or tae kwon do? It's all marketing to me, and marketing communications do not require a response.

It's just her name. She is an actual person, and so is her husband who is of course the source of the name.

Mrs. Simpson is a real person who has no correlation to Wallis Simpson - puhleeze give me a break. Her establishment is, I believe, being carried forward by her daughter and/or other children.

In any case, this is an exclusive establishment, and the best of the best socially are those who are invited to attend. You must be recommended - same deal as clubs.

Our son attended in the 90s while at Landon, and while he "hated" going, there is no doubt it served him well, as did the cotillions he was invited to as a Midshipman at the Naval Academy.

It has little in common with the typical "cotillions" and "manners classes" that dot the suburbs. It's the real deal.

Some things you just cannot buy into.

It's not that exclusive. My DS was invited to attend after started going to a private school. We are not wealthy, don't belong to a Country Club and we don't have connections. We are just fortunate enough to be able swing private school for a few years. We won't be able to afford to send all three DC's so we will have to make a decision at that time. So I'm not sure who the exclusive people are. Most of DS's friends are regular people with Dr or Lawyer parents, no real political connections.

There is an alternative! No dance instruction - but manners and etiquette for children of all ages. All children are welcome!
