That said it's not that hard to put together a carrot raisin salad or something similar, and it's surprisingly popular. I've also been known to bring a good homemade pieor banana cake. Pies can be labor intensive but there are plenty of other things that aren't. I mean seriously, how hard is it to cook some pasta, add some sauce and cheese, throw it in the oven to let the flavors blend and call it a day. Dishes like that are easy and taste better the second day. No excuse not to put together something simple and homemade.

Carrot raisin salad is repulsive.
Then don't eat it dumb ass. The whole point of a potluck is that different people bring different things and there will be something for everyone. I have never once gone home w/ leftover carrot raisin salad and have had repeated requests for the recipe. You are clearly in the minority.

I think that stuff is disgusting too. I wouldn't eat it, but I'm sure some people would. I wouldn't even pretend to want any of it!

People are just being polite. I always tell people their gross salads are delicious because they seem to need the affirmation. Carrots and raisins salad sounds gross. And I live food.

You must hate Morocco

Yep, that is right. I hate Morocco just because I loathe carrot & raisin salad. Don't even ask how I feel about Mexico because I don't like Taco Bell.

People who are really into cooking seem to not understand that some people really hate it and aren't good at it. Nowadays there are a lot of families out there that just don't cook. If there's someone in your circle who never brings homemade food to parties, my guess is they're also someone you wouldn't want to bring homemade food to parties.

Because they don't know how to cook and it's one of the rare times they actually get to eat "real" food!

Lol!!!!
carrots+raisins=how can you go wrong. Jeez, you people are like a bunch of petulant children. Let me guess, you still eat cocoa puffs, Doritos and chef boy-r-dee too? Expand your palette, you might be surprised at the discoveries you make.

I think there's a difference between a potluck where the host thinks she's throwing a party, and a gathering where it just needed to feed a hungry mob.

For the former the host can not complain because frankly she is being lame. Potlucks are a lame way to think you're being a hostess.

For the second, held at a neutral location, if a mob needs to eat (think football team, office members) than it is a neutral event and I think a potluck is fine.

Just don't throw a potluck and think you're a hostess.

I'm not at all picky! For the record, I eat carrots, I eat raisins, but adding mayonnaise & sugar & other stuff so it gets soggy & gross is not what I call appetizing.

Raisins generally are very polarizing, no?

Personally I cannot stand raisins in any kind of hot food. The way they get plumped up and reconstituted with heat and moisture makes me gag.

I love carrot and raisin salad if you leave out the mayonnaise and you add flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, baking soda, eggs, and oil, and then you bake it, and then you put cream cheese frosting on it.

not all carrot raisin salad has mayo. just like not all waldorf salad has mayo. shocking, i know, but there's a whole universe of salad out there that doesn't always contain mayo.
