Fifteen year olds no longer have nice figures

I could get away with a midriff too (though never would at my age). I've had 2 kids and still the fittest woman in my morning spinning class filled with single 20-30 year olds.

Is it the plastics??? The hormones they were exposed to in food? Too much social media, not enough activity?
The majority of Teen/college girls didn't have fat guts and love handles in the 80s.

Hmm.. They do menstruate earlier too. Gotta be something.

Well, I had a fat gut and love handles in the 80s, and I could probably deadlift you today.

Seriously, this thread is ridiculous and creepy.

If you need to see what kids should be looking like at their age, take a trip to continental Europe. Yes, yes, I know obesity is rising everywhere but it s not normal for an entire society to be pudgy or worse.

I've noticed that some little kids are what I call adult fat. Not chubby with baby fat, but they have back fat and other issues usually associated with adults. I have also noticed that some of these teenaged girls have old women bodies. I don't know if it is the food or what. I started my period at 10 - I still only weighed 95 pounds when I graduated from high school.

Is this another SES/racial thing

If you walk into any of the top hs in this area there are barely any fat people
If you go to any top colleges in the area agian barely any fat people
If you walk around downtown DC during lunch again barely any fat people

This. The people I see don't look fit, but they aren't fat. At least not in the way that I see when I travel.

I have been in two out of state weddings this year, where I have been aghast at the physical condition of many members of the bridal party (bridesmaids and groomsmen alike).

Sure this thread is creepy, but the statistics show obesity is on the rise, particularly among children. And almost never can obese children become fit and healthy adults. We have an epidemic of people raising their kids on junk food and allowing far too much screen time. It's abusive and incredibly disturbing. There is no reason for young people to be fat. None. It will harm them physically, mentally, and socially for the rest of their lives. Yet parents don't seem to care what they are doing to their kids.

This thread is weird. I have a daughter in this age range, and she and her friends are thin and fit. There are some overweight girls in her high school (a local, high SES Public) certainly, but it is a small percentage.

It's all the processed convenience food, consumption of sweetened (diet or not) drinks, and the plastic / hormones in everything.

Something has definitely gone off the rails regarding how we feed out children.
I have 4th and 5th grade girls in NW DC.
I've found that outside of a few super thin girls (genetically thin or kids who don't eat--I have one of those)) that almost every girl has a belly or roll unless they are the few girl athletes who are playing travel soccer or the like 5 days per week. They all have middle section pudge. Every one.

My 5th grader (plays soccer 6 days a week during the school year) didn't play this summer, went to sleep-away camp etc and gained about 10 pounds. She slimmed down again when school started and she started doing serious exercise. When a kid has to do serious, 6 days-a-week exercise just to remain thin-to-average something is wrong with their diet. And I'm not feeding her crap at home. It's just the sheer frequency at which these kids are socialized into eating--a snack each day at school, two snacks a day at camp, birthday treats at school monthly, constant birthday party treats, a snack with very visit to a friends' house or playdate, and on and on and on. This amount of food catches up to kids metabolisms quickly once they're out of early elementary-hood.

It's plain to see that there are more obese people now than there were in the 1970s, 80s & 90s. In the 70s & 80s, it was very rare to see a truly obese person. So much more common now. DFW airport is a parade of obese people of all SES.

Around NoVa, I see obese children all the time and it's very troubling because their parents are responsible for the bad food choices that result in a 9YO that's 40lbs overweight.

Teens are enjoying more freedom and independence, which results in a lot more junk food. Not a great choice, but if they are active, they'll keep the weight off. Problem is, many teens lay in front of the xbox undisturbed for 4+ hours and weight piles on. It's mean ol' Mom & Dad's job to get them on the right track. I know girls are sensitive to comments about their weight, but a problem can't be solved if it's not addressed.

Part of the answer of why children and teens are heavier may lie in how we are feeding our infants. Here are a few links to articles discussing the findings that babies who are exclusively breastfed and are not exposed to solid foods until after six months tend to have lower BMIs when they are older than those who were formula fed and/or given solid foods at earlier ages. Also, the longer time a child is exclusively breastfed, the lower the chance that the child will be overweight or obese.

It doesn't seem to affect many of the benefits. The human body takes the components it has and produces appropriate milk. These art let's discuss studies done on children from a variety of demographic groups.

Articles, not art let's.

But formula was widely used back to the 50s, and there were far fewer overweight children in previous decades than now.
