This is a Russian movie from about 15 years ago. In Russian it's called "Vor" and in English "The Thief"

Second "The Magdalene Sisters." Not sure I've ever been so disturbed by a movie.

The Fall- filmed all over the world allegedly without special effects. It took five years to make. Shockingly beautiful and an amazing child actor.

Murder in the First

Both Ed Norton and Kevin Bacon should've received Oscars for their roles in the respective movies.

OMG yes. Ed Norton was scary as hell in that movie. The curb scene....shudder.

American History X was a difficult movie to watch. Ed Norton was indeed a scary.

Would also recommend the John Woo movies Hard Boiled and A Better Tomorrow. Long Arm of the Law (another Hong Kong movie) also has a fantastic ending.

Some others:

A Touch of Zen
Dead Calm
Ran
The Quiet Earth (NZ film)
Dead Again

Anything by Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire director). His most compelling movie was back in early 1990s called Until the End of the World with William Hurt and Sam Neill. Killer soundtrack but what was most interesting is how forward thinking he was in terms of technology and its effect on individuals and society. I'd like to see it again now. It is one that has stuck the most with DH and I over the years. I recommend not reading up on it, just rent it and let it unfold.

I almost mentioned Until the End of the World. Loved that soundtrack, too. The only thing at held me back was that the movie is like 3 movies.

Another early 90s movie - Henry and June.

The movies that are the most jaw-dropping for me (and often stick with me the most) are the ones I find very disturbing. So along those lines, I'd suggest:

Grizzly Man (a documentary, mention by a PP)
The Snowtown Murders
Full Metal Jacket (I still watch this every.single.time I run into it on tv)
