Oh for God's sake, being racist is not illegal

Again, it's not a free speech issue. Make sure that your boss and or stakeholders don't care if you're a racist fuck before you shoot your mouth off.

Yes, but racist thoughts expressed in private conversation are not actionable discrimination, except perhaps if they are shared with an employee who claims such discrimination. No matter how offensive, odious and bone-headed, the Constitution protects most speech.

...the Constitution protects most speech FROM ACTION BY THE GOVERNMENT.

Is it the government taking action? Nope. It's the NBA. The Constitution does not protect most speech from action by the NBA.

Stop trying to talk sense to stupid

You are so stupid that you do not even understand that your own privacy and freedom of speech is affected by this. There is no cure for stupid.

I admit, I thought the decision was rather harsh, no matter how foul and vile of a man I find him to be. Hearing that tape downright hurt, and I know a lot of people share his sentiment behind closed doors. I put my personal feelings and emotions aside and was like damn, they destroyed him. That's one of those things that I would not wish on my worse enemy. However it makes we wonder if it was still legal to make us work for free, would Don Sterling be the first one lined up to inspect the goods?

As person of color, I believe any stomping out of racism is victory for ALL people. Now all these idiots who are mad, well...you can't fight stupid

Then don't buy his records. Just don't . I don't give money to people whose words and actions u find offensive, no matter what the color.
You have no point.

PP has a point.

Anyone in entertainment has an audience, and while most adults can figure things out, kids are vulnerable. So to a kid with limited experience, Jay Z (and others) is cool.

THAT'S the point. sorry you can't grasp the bigger picture

I'm confused. What disparaging and racist comments has Jay-Z said about white people in his lyrics?

She only knows his name. She does not know his lyrics.

This is not unprecedented. I think it was the 80's, but it could have been early 90's, MLB banned the cincinnati
Reds owner for life for wearing a swastika and saying Hitler was not all bad. Eventually she was forced to sell her team. I don't recall anyone expressing their fatigue of hearing about the matter.

Schott was not a lifetime ban and more importantly selig did not force her to sell the team.

Her Limited Parnter's decided to take that action on their own.

This case is different....in that someone outside of the ownership of the clippers will vote to determine a forcible sale of the property. It is much more agressive than what MLB did with Schott

Well if that's the case, good for the NBA for being aggressive and progressive. Shame on the MLB for their weak passivity.

What about a team owner who has contributed money to initiatives against gay marriage? Will the PC police come for him/her next?

Good. I hope racists everywhere are in fear of speaking vile comments, even in private.

I'm not the idiot who doesn't understand how the Constitution works.

this has nothing to do with free speech. it has to do with people saying that no, I don't want to do business with you. PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH PEOPLE THEY FEEL ARE OFFENSIVE AND/OR HURTING THEIR BOTTOM LINE. I have a right to not shop at Giant if I don't care for their business practices, I don't have to shop at Walmart or Granny's Flower shop. You can say what you want, but you can't make people do business with you.
Free speech does not equal free from consequences.

Lots of people are missing this key point.

Maybe or maybe not. But it happened with Mozilla: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/03/us-mozilla-ceo-resignation-idUSBREA321Y320140403

Again, the point is that this was a commercial concern, not a legal concern. The government did NOT go after Eich -- quite the contrary, the Constitution (1st amenment) protects his right to think what he wants. Instead, Mozilla's own Board went after Eich because the browser company was being threatened with a boycott (if you bother to read the article at the link). In other words, Eich was bad for Mozilla's business.

I think many people, of all races, have said things in private that would be embarrassing if made public. do we want to have a society where you need everyone around you, including family members, to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement before communicating? Do we need to check for wires before every pillow-chat? come on. this is absurd.

you are allowed to be a jerk.
