Not appealing maybe, but it's feasible for just about anyone. It's just planning, routing and gear. Lots of daily suit-wearers have 15 mile+ bike commutes from corners of the city that you would not think are bike friendly. |
| Try biking with an infant and a toddler to two separate schools / daycare located on or across state highways and then talk to me about biking being feasible for just about everyone! |
| If those who could bike were out there on bikes, the ones for whom biking is not feasible, like PP, would have a much easier time. I just put in a "bike garage" below our deck because I am determined to become one of those out there on a bike. |
Believe it or not, it's totally doable, maybe not for every stage (the above sounds rough) but with the right bike/trailer, planning and gumption, sure. A couple at our daycare do it every day, everone else leaves a stroller, they leave their trailer. Awesome! Check out http://bikearlingtonforum.com (it actually covers the whole area) for great advice, routes and moral support. FWIW- by riding my bike 30% of the time last year (50 mile RT bike commute vs 60 mile tollroad commute) I saved $2500+ on gas/tolls and about $800 on a gym membership |
