Remorse Upon Remorse

By the way, it takes 20 min door-to-door to ride from Cap Hill to Georgetown on a bike. That's why you see all those bike lanes cropping up in the city.

Biking is neither appealing nor feasible for quite a few people.

Not appealing maybe, but it's feasible for just about anyone. It's just planning, routing and gear. Lots of daily suit-wearers have 15 mile+ bike commutes from corners of the city that you would not think are bike friendly.

Try biking with an infant and a toddler to two separate schools / daycare located on or across state highways and then talk to me about biking being feasible for just about everyone!

If those who could bike were out there on bikes, the ones for whom biking is not feasible, like PP, would have a much easier time. I just put in a "bike garage" below our deck because I am determined to become one of those out there on a bike.

Believe it or not, it's totally doable, maybe not for every stage (the above sounds rough) but with the right bike/trailer, planning and gumption, sure. A couple at our daycare do it every day, everone else leaves a stroller, they leave their trailer.

WWPBMD (what would Portland Bike mom do):

(and yes, this is nuts)

Awesome!

Check out http://bikearlingtonforum.com (it actually covers the whole area) for great advice, routes and moral support.

FWIW- by riding my bike 30% of the time last year (50 mile RT bike commute vs 60 mile tollroad commute) I saved $2500+ on gas/tolls and about $800 on a gym membership
